Sam in Stardew Valley: Complete Gift Preferences and Heart Event Walkthrough

Other Games·June 13, 2023·21 min read

If you have spent any time wandering Pelican Town, chances are you have crossed paths with a cheerful blonde guy in a blue shirt. That is Sam, one of the bachelors available for friendship and eventual marriage in Stardew Valley. Like any villager, he needs presents and patience before he opens up. This guide walks through what he likes, what he absolutely does not, and how to unlock every cutscene tied to his heart meter.

Who Sam Actually Is

Sam is the local aspiring musician. He plays guitar and drums, and he is constantly trying to convince his best friend Sebastian to start a band with him. When he is not noodling on an instrument, you will catch him cruising around on his skateboard or burning hours on video games. Standard small-town twenty-something behavior.

His house sits at 1 Willow Lane, on the south side of Pelican Town. He shares it with his mother Jodi and his little brother Vincent. His father, Kent, comes home from military service starting in Spring of Year 2, which changes the family dynamic on screen.

How Gifting Works With Sam

The usual rules apply: you can hand him up to two gifts per week, with a bonus present allowed on his birthday on Summer 17. Miss that birthday at your own social peril.

Sam's reactions are pretty easy to read. His dialogue tells you exactly where on the love-to-loathe spectrum your gift landed:

  • Love: "Aw, yea! This is my absolute favorite!"
  • Like: "Thanks! I really like this."
  • Neutral: "You got that for me? Thanks!"
  • Dislike: "Hmm... this is... interesting."
  • Hate: "You really don't get it, huh?"

Loved Gifts

These give the biggest friendship boost. Worth saving for birthdays or special occasions.

  • Cactus Fruit
  • Maple Bar
  • Pizza
  • Tigerseye

Liked Gifts

Solid filler choices when you do not have something he loves on hand.

  • Joja Cola
  • All Eggs except Void Egg
  • All Universal Likes except Mayonnaise, Pickles, Vegetables, and Duck Mayonnaise

Neutral Gifts

Not a waste, but not exciting either.

  • All Milk
  • All Universal Neutrals
  • All Fruit except Salmonberry, Cactus Fruit, and Fruit Tree Fruit

Disliked Gifts

Avoid unless you enjoy chipping away at your own progress.

  • Chanterelle
  • Common Mushroom
  • Daffodil
  • Dandelion
  • Ginger
  • Hazelnut
  • Holly
  • Leek
  • Magma Cap
  • Morel

  • All Vegetables except Hops, Wheat, and Tea Leaves
  • All Universal Dislikes except Coal, Tigerseye, Copper Bars, Gold Bars, Gold Ore, Iridium Bars, Iridium Ore, Iron Bars, and Refined Quartz

Hated Gifts

These actively damage your friendship. Never give Sam a bar of iridium and expect a smile.

  • Gold Bar
  • Gold Ore
  • Iridium Bar
  • Iridium Ore
  • Iron Bar
  • Mayonnaise

Heart Events With Sam

Unlike some villagers who treat strangers with cold suspicion (looking at you, Haley), Sam is approachable from day one. Still, the deeper friendship tiers unlock cutscenes that flesh out his personality. Events fire at the two, three, four, six, eight, and ten-heart marks. There is also a 14-heart event, but it only triggers after you marry him.

Two Hearts

Walk into Sam's house and head upstairs to his room while he is home. You will catch him and Sebastian playing music together. He will ask about your musical taste. Pick any response. None of the answers shift your friendship score.

Three Hearts

Visit the beach on any sunny day outside winter, between 7 AM and 3 PM. Sam will be watching Vincent play in the sand. He shares his thoughts and asks for yours. Pick whatever feels right. Again, no friendship impact.

Heads up: this scene only triggers during Year 1. Miss it and it is gone for good.

Four Hearts

Enter Sam's house while he is inside. The scene shows him fumbling an egg in the kitchen, which prompts his mom Jodi to walk in and investigate. This one is the first event where your answer actually moves the needle:

  • -10 friendship: "Sam dropped the snack as he was handing it to me."
  • +50 friendship: "Sam handed me the snack and then I dropped it."
  • -50 friendship: "Sam dropped it on purpose. He thought it would be funny."

Taking the blame is clearly the move here.

Six Hearts

Walk into Pelican Town on any non-rainy day between 12 PM and 4 PM. You will find Sam skateboarding in a way that catches Mayor Lewis's attention. Lewis scolds him, then turns to you for an opinion. Your reply does not change your standing with Sam.

Eight Hearts

Leave your farmhouse between 6 AM and 8 AM and Sam will be waiting outside. He invites you to watch his band play in Zuzu City. Head to the bus stop at 4 PM the same day to make the trip.

Heads up: the band performance only happens if you already triggered the two-heart event. Skip the prerequisite and there is no concert.

Ten Hearts

First, wait for a letter from Sam to land in your mailbox. Then enter town on a sunny night between 8 PM and 12 AM. You will find him standing outside his house, and he confesses his feelings to you. Jodi comes out to check on him mid-conversation and he covers for himself. Two reply options appear, and either one is fine. Your friendship score holds steady regardless.

From here, a bouquet and eventually a Mermaid's Pendant will move things into proper relationship territory. Stack his loved gifts, hit each heart event in order, and Sam goes from skateboard kid to permanent member of your farm crew.
