Monster Compendium in Stardew Valley: Drop Rate Booster Explained

Other Games·December 1, 2024·9 min read

Grinding the mines for rare drops is its own reward, except when it is not. If you would rather not spend another full season chasing slimes for one extra void essence, Stardew Valley hides a book that quietly tilts the odds in your favor. This guide walks through what the Monster Compendium does, how to actually get one, and what else it is good for once you have read it.

What the Monster Compendium Actually Does

Reading the Monster Compendium permanently gives your character a 3% chance for any monster to drop double loot on kill. The effect is global across every enemy in the game, from the lowliest green slime to the toughest mine lurker.

Better still, the bonus stacks with similar gear. If you already wear a Burglar's Ring, for example, the two effects add together rather than overwriting each other, so your odds climb higher with each layer.

A few practical notes:

  • The first read is the only one that grants the permanent buff.
  • Every subsequent read awards 100 combat experience instead.
  • Vendor value sits at 2000g if you ever decide to part with one.

How to Get Your Hands on One

The Compendium becomes available as a monster drop after your character has racked up at least ten monster kills. From that point on, every monster has a starting 0.01% chance to drop one, and that chance grows by 0.015% per kill until a Compendium finally appears.

Once you have looted your first copy, the drop rate locks in at a permanent 0.5% for any future Compendiums. So the long grind only happens once.

The alternative path opens in Year 3: the traveling Bookseller may sell one for 20,000g. The catch is that the Compendium has only a 9% chance of showing up in their inventory on any given visit, so do not plan your savings around it.

Gifting and Other Uses

The Compendium is not a thrilling gift compared to a bouquet or a diamond, but if you happen to have a spare, a few villagers appreciate it.

Everyone else lands at neutral, with one exception: Alex actively dislikes it. He prefers protein shakes to monster lore, apparently.

There is also a trade option. After you have read at least one Compendium, you can hand two spare copies to the Bookseller in exchange for a Slime Egg-Press and a Slime Incubator. Beyond that, the book is not tied to any bundles or quests, so any extras are safe to sell, gift, or hoard for the shelf decor.
