Befriending Marnie in Stardew Valley: Gift Preferences and Heart Event Walkthrough

Other Games·October 29, 2025·15 min read

Marnie runs the ranch on the western edge of Pelican Town, and while she is not part of Stardew Valley's marriage roster, climbing her friendship meter still pays off. Higher hearts unlock useful recipes and tighten the social fabric of the town. This guide breaks down what to put in her hands, what to keep far away from her, and every cutscene that fires as your bond grows.

Who Marnie Is

If you have ever bought a chicken in Stardew Valley, you have already done business with Marnie. She owns Marnie's Ranch, the village's hub for livestock and animal supplies. Hay, Shears, a starter Birdhouse, and the animals themselves (cows for the barn, chickens for the coop, and so on) all funnel through her counter.

Her design matches her role. Warm features, red hair, a relaxed posture. She is the kind of NPC most players are happy to bump into on the road, which makes the gift grind feel less like homework.

How Gifting Marnie Works

You get two gifts per week to spend on her, plus one bonus gift on her birthday, Fall 18. Bring something she loves on her birthday and the friendship boost multiplies, so save your strongest item for that date.

When you hand something over, her reply tells you exactly what tier the gift sits in:

  • Loved: "This is an incredible gift! Thanks!!"
  • Liked: "Thank you!"
  • Neutral: "Thank you! This looks nice."
  • Disliked: "Oh. I guess I'll take it."
  • Hated: "This is worthless. I don't understand you."

If you forget the chart, just read the punctuation. Two exclamation marks mean you nailed it.

Loved Gifts

These are the items that yield the highest friendship gain per drop:

  • Diamond
  • Farmer's Lunch
  • Pink Cake
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Stardrop Tea

Stardrop Tea also triggers a unique line: "Wow, thanks a million, [Player Name]. I won't forget this!" Worth chasing if you want to see all of her flavor text.

Liked Gifts

  • Stardew Valley Almanac
  • Quartz

The Almanac has its own custom reaction: "Thanks, [Player Name]. I always like to have a copy of the Almanac around. It's pretty accurate!"

Neutral Gifts

These will not hurt your standing, but they do not help much either. Save them for an NPC who actually wants them:

  • Chanterelle
  • Common Mushroom
  • Daffodil
  • Dandelion
  • Ginger
  • Hazelnut
  • Leek
  • Magma Cap
  • Morel
  • Purple Mushroom
  • Snow Yam
  • Winter Root

Disliked Gifts

  • Salmonberry
  • Seaweed
  • Wild Horseradish

Hated Gifts

Hand these over and you actively lose friendship points:

  • Clay
  • Holly

Heart Events

Marnie's heart events kick in once you reach three hearts on her Social tab. Each one has its own trigger window and conditions.

First Three-Heart Event

Leave the farmhouse between 6:00 AM and 9:30 AM and Marnie will stop you to ask for a Cave Carrot, her favorite snack. Bring one to her ranch the same day between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM with the carrot in your inventory, and the cutscene plays automatically when you step inside.

Second Three-Heart Event

The follow-up is passive. Marnie mails you the Pale Broth recipe. Open your mailbox and the event is done.

Six-Heart Event

This one needs a parallel relationship. Mayor Lewis must also be at six hearts with you. Once both meters are high enough, walk into Pelican Town on a sunny evening between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM and a cutscene reveals a small piece of village gossip the two of them have been keeping quiet. You then pick a dialogue option:

  • Yes... but I'll keep it a secret: +50 friendship with Mayor Lewis.
  • Yes... and I'm going to tell everyone: -100 friendship with Mayor Lewis.

You can still rebuild the relationship after picking the second option, but expect a slower climb back than normal repair.

Seven-Heart Event

At seven hearts, Marnie mails the Rhubarb Pie recipe. Like the Pale Broth event, collect it from the mailbox to register the event in your log.

Before Stardew Valley Update 1.4, every recipe from Marnie arrived during the three-heart event. The current schedule spreads the rewards across multiple milestones, so check the mailbox after each new heart.
