Stardew Valley Hardwood: Farming Spots, Robin's Stock, and Every Recipe

Other Games·June 2, 2024·17 min read

Sooner or later, every Stardew Valley farmer hits a wall where regular oak logs simply do not cut it anymore. Late-game upgrades, totems, and the heavier farm buildings all demand Hardwood, a denser variant of wood that takes a stronger axe and a bit of planning to gather. This guide walks through every reliable source of Hardwood, when Robin will sell it, and the full list of recipes and structures that use it.

Where Hardwood Comes From

Hardwood drops from a handful of specific objects, and each one has its own tool requirement:

  • Mahogany Trees and Mystic Trees: any axe, even the rusty starter, will produce Hardwood when you fell one.
  • Large Stumps: a Copper Axe or higher is needed to break them.
  • Large Logs: a Steel Axe or higher is the minimum.

Mystic Trees and Mahogany Trees can be grown from saplings if you want a steady supply on your own farm, which is the most consistent long-term option once you have the Greenhouse or some spare tillable land.

Best Daily Farming Spots

A few locations spawn fresh Hardwood sources every in-game day, which makes them ideal for routine runs.

  • Secret Woods: six Large Stumps respawn daily, giving you 12 Hardwood per visit. The entrance sits in the northwest corner of Cindersap Forest, behind a Large Log you will need to clear with a Steel Axe first.
  • Forest Farm layout: eight Large Stumps regenerate every day right on your home map.
  • Four Corners Farm layout: a single Large Stump tucked into the upper-left section.
  • The Mines: smashing pots and crates has a small chance to drop Hardwood.
  • Dangerous Mines, floors 51 to 69: chopping the trees that spawn down there yields Hardwood.
  • Lumberjack profession: with this Foraging perk active, regular trees occasionally drop Hardwood, which turns every wood run into a passive farm.
  • Fish Pond with a Woodskip: a populated pond can produce up to five Hardwood as a quest reward.

Most serious farmers combine two or three of these. Secret Woods plus a Forest Farm layout is usually enough to keep crafting projects moving without ever feeling like a chore.

Buying Hardwood From Robin

Robin keeps Hardwood in her Carpenter's Shop inventory, but only during the Spring Desert Festival. Instead of gold, she takes Calico Eggs, the festival currency you earn from minigames and chests. The going rate is three Calico Eggs per Hardwood.

It is not exactly a bulk-supply option, but it is a useful nudge if you need a few extra pieces to finish a build before the season changes.

A few of Robin's blueprints lean heavily on it as well:

  • Pet Bowl: 25 Hardwood and 5,000g.

Other Uses Worth Knowing

Robin is the only villager in town who actually appreciates Hardwood as a gift. Hand a chunk to anyone else and you will lose friendship points, which is a strangely specific personality trait but it tracks for a carpenter.

Hardwood also works as a spool in the Sewing Machine and turns Cloth into a Shirt. And once you have ten pieces to spare, you can donate them to the Community Center's Construction Bundle, which fixes the bridge to the Quarry and the Quarry Mine, opening up a whole new mining loop.

Keep a chest dedicated to Hardwood and you will almost always have enough for the next project on the list.
