Haley in Stardew Valley: Gifts She Loves, Hates, and Every Heart Event

Other Games·June 4, 2023·16 min read

Haley sits firmly in the marriage roster of Stardew Valley, but her opening dialogue does her no favors. Between the eye rolls and the comments about how dirty everything is, plenty of farmers write her off in the first week. Stick with her and a different character shows up: less interested in mirrors, more interested in you. The trick is knowing what to hand her and which scenes to chase.

Who Haley Is and Why She Seems Difficult

Haley grew up comfortable, and it shows. She judges fast, dresses for a city she does not actually live in, and treats farm life like an inconvenient backdrop. That background is also why her list of disliked gifts is one of the longest in the game. Hand her something off her wavelength and you can lose a chunk of friendship in seconds.

You will usually find her wandering Pelican Town in outfits that have no business near a barn. Once you unlock the Beach Resort on Ginger Island, she becomes a regular there too.

Gift Rules to Know Before You Start

Haley accepts up to two gifts per week, plus a bonus on her birthday on the 14th of Spring. The birthday gift is worth a heavy multiplier, so save your best item of the season for that day.

Her reaction line tells you exactly where the gift landed:

  • Love: "Oh my god, this is my favorite thing!"
  • Like: "gasp...for me? Thank you!"
  • Neutral: "Thank you. I love presents."
  • Dislike: "Ugh...that's such a stupid gift."
  • Hate: "Gross!"

Loved Gifts

These give the strongest friendship boost and are the only items you should be handing over on her birthday.

  • Coconut
  • Fruit Salad
  • Pink Cake
  • Sunflower

Liked Gifts

  • Daffodil
  • All Universal Likes, including Truffle Oil

Neutral Gifts

  • Every Universal Neutral, no exceptions

Disliked Gifts

Most foraged goods land here, which is why a casual handful of mushrooms can backfire.

  • Chanterelle
  • Common Mushroom
  • Dandelion
  • Ginger
  • Hazelnut
  • Holly
  • Leek
  • Magma Cap
  • Morel
  • Purple Mushroom
  • Quartz
  • Snow Yam
  • Winter Root
  • All Eggs
  • All Milk
  • All Fruit except Coconut
  • All Vegetables except Hops, Wheat, and Tea Leaves

Hated Gifts

Never, under any circumstance, give her any of these.

  • Clay
  • Prismatic Shard
  • Wild Horseradish
  • All Fish

Yes, the Prismatic Shard hurts. She does not care.

Heart Events Walkthrough

Heart events fire on every even friendship level up to ten hearts, as long as you meet the location and time conditions. There is also a fourteen-heart event added in version 1.4, but it only triggers after marriage.

Two Hearts

Walk into Haley's house at 2 Willow Lane. She is mid-argument with her sister Emily about a chore. Three responses appear and your pick swings the relationship one way or the other.

  • "Stop whining and just clean it!" loses 50 friendship.
  • "Haley, why not have this be your one weekly job?" gains 30.
  • "Emily, take the high road and do it this time." loses 30.

Four Hearts

Return to her house when she is home. She is wrestling with a stuck jar lid and asks if you are strong. Say yes for plus 30 friendship. Say no and lose 30. There is no upside to false modesty here.

Six Hearts

Between 10 am and 4 pm on any non-winter day, head to the beach. Haley is upset about a missing bracelet. Two replies are offered:

  • "Relax, I'll just buy you a new one!" loses 30 friendship.
  • "I'm really sorry..." gains 50.
Tip: the bracelet is hidden in a shrub behind Elliot's cabin. Pick it up, hand it back to her, and she remembers the gesture for a long time.

Eight Hearts

Visit Cindersap Forest on a sunny day, in any season except winter, between 10 am and 4 pm. You will catch Haley taking photos at Marnie's ranch. There are no choices in this one. Just let it play out.

Ten Hearts

Enter her house while she is home and you will find her in a darkroom, developing photos. The first set of choices does affect friendship:

  • "It looks great!" gains 10.
  • "What does it do?" is neutral.
  • "I've seen better." loses 50.

The scene continues regardless. A second set of options follows, but those are flavor only and have no friendship impact.

Spoiler: pick "Try to kiss her" if you want the romantic payoff this whole guide has been building toward.

Quick Strategy if You Are Starting Today

Plant sunflowers in summer and stockpile coconuts from Ginger Island. Cook a Pink Cake for her birthday. Skip every fish, mushroom, and shiny rock you find in the mines, no matter how proud you are of it. Within a couple of in-game seasons you will be at four hearts and headed straight for the bouquet.
