Stardew Valley Green Rain: Trigger Days, Tree Stages, and Moss Crafting

Other Games·December 4, 2024·13 min read

Patch 1.6 added one of the more unusual weather events the valley has ever seen: the Green Rain. It happens once per summer, drenches almost everything in a glowing emerald downpour, and rewards farmers who plan their day around it. Trees rocket through their growth stages, Moss appears everywhere, and a handful of new crafting recipes suddenly become realistic.

Here is a full breakdown of how the event triggers, what it does to the world, and how to actually use the loot afterward.

When Green Rain Can Happen

The short answer: you cannot force it. The event is locked to summer and to a specific pool of possible dates. It will roll on one of these days:

  • Summer 5, 6, 7
  • Summer 14, 15, 16
  • Summer 18
  • Summer 23

Since you cannot pick the date, your best preparation tool is the television. Watch the daily forecast at home, and if the meteorologist suddenly gets confused and says something along the lines of "Um... There appears to be some kind of... anomalous reading... I... don't know what this means," you can stop guessing. Green Rain will land on the next available date from that list.

The morning it actually arrives, the game greets you with the message "A green rain has descended upon the valley." That is your cue to clear your schedule.

What the Event Does to Your Farm

Green Rain accelerates tree growth across the entire map, with two exceptions: the Beach and the Calico Desert. Saplings everywhere else get a serious push:

  • Stage 1 saplings advance to Stage 2, with a 50% chance of jumping all the way to Stage 4.
  • Stage 2 and Stage 3 saplings advance straight to Stage 4.

If you have been sitting on a forest of half grown trees waiting for Sap or Maple Syrup, this is the day to come back later and chop the field.

The Three Green Rain Tree Types

During the event, the valley also fills with Green Rain Trees and a generous amount of weeds. Existing fully grown Oak and Maple trees can temporarily disguise themselves as Green Rain Trees while the event lasts. There are three variants:

  1. Type 1. Shake it for a chance at a Mossy Seed. Chopping it down can yield Moss, Wood, Sap, and Mossy Seeds.
  2. Type 2. Visually similar to Type 1 but more likely to grow Moss on its trunk. Same shake and chop drops.
  3. Type 3. The tall vine looking variant. No Moss on the trunk, but shaking still has a chance to drop Mossy Seeds. Chopping it can drop Fiddlehead Ferns and Mossy Seeds.

Grab the Mossy Seeds you find. They are the only way to plant your own Green Rain Trees later.

What to Do With All That Moss

Moss is the headline new weed introduced in Update 1.6. It spawns in unusually high quantities during the event, which is the polite way of saying you will be tripping over it for the rest of the day.

It feeds into a long list of recipes worth crafting at least once for the perfection tracker:

  • Speed-Gro: 1x Pine Tar, 5x Moss
  • Mushroom Log: 10x Hardwood, 10x Moss
  • Statue of Blessings: 999x Stone, 999x Fiber, 999x Sap, 999x Moss
  • Deluxe Worm Bin: 1x Worm Bin, 30x Moss
  • Deluxe Bait: 5x Bait, 2x Moss
  • Challenge Bait: 5x Bone Fragment, 2x Moss
  • Treasure Totem: 5x Hardwood, 1x Mystic Syrup, 10x Moss
  • Blue Grass Starter: 25x Fiber, 10x Moss, 1x Mystic Syrup

A few more practical uses outside the crafting menu:

  • Moss Soup. Cook 20x Moss into a single dish that restores 31 Health and 70 Energy.
  • Green dye. Drop it into the Sewing Machine spool, or use the dye stations at Emily and Haley's house.
  • Raccoon trade. Bring 5x Moss to the Raccoon's Wife at the Giant Stump and she will hand over a bag of Broccoli Seeds.

One warning. Do not gift Moss to villagers as a friendship shortcut. Sebastian, Harvey, Abigail, and most of the rest of the cast actively dislike it, so you are spending a season of effort just to lose hearts. There are easier ways to ruin a Tuesday.
