The Golden Scythe is the upgraded version of the basic Scythe in Stardew Valley, and it comes with a few quality of life perks that make farm life noticeably easier. Its cutting radius is wider and it has a better chance of dropping hay when slicing tall grass. The catch is that the game does not exactly hand it to you on day one.

The Golden Scythe sits inside the Quarry Mine, an area added in version 1.4. The entrance is tucked just to the left of the Quarry itself. To reach the Quarry you head north of the bridge at the top of the map. New players usually arrive only to discover that the bridge is broken and impassable.

The bridge gets fixed automatically once you complete the Crafts Room in the Community Center. That single milestone also unlocks the Quarry and, by extension, the Quarry Mine. Finishing the Crafts Room means handing over the items listed across the bundles below.
Quick reminder: the Quarry Mine is a separate dungeon from the regular Mines. Do not confuse the two.

Crossing the bridge is only half the battle. The Quarry Mine is patrolled by three enemies that take turns ruining your day:
The Skulls are the genuinely irritating ones, since they appear in waves and chip away at your health quickly. Bring your sharpest weapon with decent attack speed, ideally a sword. Clubs swing too slowly and daggers have almost no reach, so leave both at home. Pack healing items and food to keep energy topped up.
If you do faint inside, you wake up at the Quarry Mine entrance rather than back at the farm. A small mercy from the developers.
After clearing the gauntlet you will reach a statue at the end of the mine. Interact with it and the Golden Scythe is yours. Its stats look like this:
Warning: the Golden Scythe is irreplaceable. If you lose it, it is gone for good, so try not to sell it during a 2 AM inventory cleanup.
That is everything you need to claim the Golden Scythe and put it to work clearing your fields with much less effort.
