Dorado in Stardew Valley: Where to Catch It and Smart Ways to Use It

Other Games·December 7, 2023·10 min read

Stardew Valley rewards anyone willing to squeeze value from the map, and the Dorado sits in that mid-tier slot where a small fishing habit produces a steady gold bump. Here is what you need to know before heading to the river.

Where the Dorado Spawns

The Dorado lives in the forest river and only appears during Summer. That window is narrow, so plan around it instead of hoping for a lucky cast outside the season.

Two backup sources exist if the river is not cooperating:

  • Krobus' shop on Wednesdays, which occasionally stocks one.
  • The Traveling Cart, where rotating inventory sometimes includes a Dorado.

Both are RNG-heavy, so the river remains the most reliable option. Catching one yourself is also faster than waiting weeks for a merchant roll to land in your favor.

What the Dorado Is Actually Good For

The Dorado is flexible. Most players use it in one of the ways below, listed roughly by how often they come up in practice.

Eating it

A raw Dorado restores between 25 Energy and 11 Health at base quality and up to 65 Energy and 29 Health at iridium. Fine in a pinch, although cooked dishes generally pay off better in both stats and gold.

Selling it

A raw Dorado sells for 100 to 200 gold depending on quality. Two profession bonuses apply:

  • Fisher: +25% sell price.
  • Angler: +50% sell price.

If gold is the goal, Angler is the obvious pick.

Fish Pond farming

Drop a Dorado into a Fish Pond and it produces Roe, each selling for 80 gold. Stack a few ponds and the Dorado quietly turns into passive income with very little babysitting.

Cooking and crafting

The Dorado works as a generic "any fish" ingredient in several recipes:

  • Maki Roll: 1x Seaweed, 1x Rice, 1x Dorado.
  • Sashimi: 1x Dorado.
  • Quality Fertilizer: 2x Sap, 1x Dorado.

Tailoring

Used as a spool in the Sewing Machine, a Dorado yields a dyeable Fish Shirt. Cosmetic, but worth knowing if you are working toward outfits.

Special Orders

As of patch 1.5, Demetrius can request 10 Dorado as a Special Order. Keep a few in storage instead of selling everything on the spot.

Who Not to Gift One To

This is where new players lose friendship points. The Dorado is widely disliked across the valley, so it almost never makes a safe present, and a small group actively hates it, which costs even more.

Villagers who dislike Dorado

Abigail, Alex, Caroline, Clint, Dwarf, Emily, George, Gus, Harvey, Jas, Jodi, Kent, Krobus, Leah, Lewis, Marnie, Maru, Penny, Robin, Sam, Sandy, Shane, Vincent, Wizard.

Villagers who hate Dorado

Evelyn, Haley, Pierre.

Short version: unless you know someone genuinely loves fish, sell the Dorado, cook it, or feed it to a pond. Almost no one in town wants it wrapped in a bow.
