Stardew Valley Coop: Building, Upgrading, and All Livestock Tiers

Other Games·July 6, 2023·9 min read

The Coop is one of the first farm buildings worth saving up for in Stardew Valley. Once it stands on your land, you can start raising chickens, hatching eggs, and slowly turning a tiny pen into a small empire of feathered (and occasionally scaly) profits.

Below is everything you need to plan the build, fund the upgrades, and figure out which animals show up at each tier.

Getting the First Coop Built

Construction is handled by Robin, who runs the Carpenter's Shop at 24 Mountain Road, on the way up to the mountain. She is also the mother of Maru and Sebastian, if names from town are blurring together.

To commission the base Coop, you will need:

  • 300x Wood
  • 100x Stone
  • 4,000 gold

With the materials in your inventory and the gold ready, pick a spot on your farm. Robin will take three in-game days to finish the structure, and you cannot chat with her or give her gifts while she is working.

A standard Coop ships with:

  • Capacity: 4 animals
  • Animals available: Chicken
  • Built-in features: Hay Hopper and Feeding Bench

Coop Upgrades and Animal Additions

Once the base Coop is up, there are two upgrade tiers available. Stop by Robin's shop between 9 AM and 5 PM any day except Tuesday, when she takes the day off. Each upgrade also takes two in-game days to complete.

Big Coop

  • Cost: 10,000 gold
  • Materials: 400x Wood, 150x Stone
  • Capacity: 8 animals
  • New animals: Duck, Void Chicken, Dinosaur, Golden Chicken
  • Added feature: Incubator, for turning eggs into more poultry

Deluxe Coop

  • Cost: 20,000 gold
  • Materials: 500x Wood, 200x Stone
  • Capacity: 12 animals
  • New animals: Rabbit
  • Added feature: Auto-feed system, so you can skip the daily hay run

Selling and Butchering

You can sell any animal in your Coop for extra cash. What you cannot do is butcher them, per the official word from the developer. Pelican Town is, apparently, vegetarian-leaning.

Keep the Coop populated and feed everyone daily, and your mornings start paying you back in eggs, mayonnaise, rabbit's feet, and the occasional dinosaur egg worth a small fortune.
