Stardew Valley Clint Gift Guide: Best Gifts, Reactions, and Every Heart Event

Other Games·February 28, 2026·21 min read

Clint is the kind of villager who answers most questions with a hammer strike. He spends his days at the forge and his nights tucked into a corner of the Stardrop Saloon, quietly nursing a cold and a long list of regrets. Bring him the right gift and that gruff exterior cracks open just enough to let a friendship through.

This guide covers what Clint loves, what he tolerates, what to never put in his hands, and how to clear every one of his heart events.

Who Clint Is and Why He Matters

Clint runs the only blacksmith shop in Pelican Town, which makes him useful from day one. He upgrades your tools, breaks open geodes, and processes ores you can't smelt yourself. He's also painfully shy. If he isn't behind his anvil, odds are he's hiding in the dark end of the Saloon, hoping nobody notices him.

Underneath the soot and the shoulders, Clint is a decent man worn down by routine and a crush he can't seem to act on. Minor spoiler: he's been quietly fond of Emily for a while, and never finds the right moment to say so. Players who put in the work to befriend him get to see a more open Clint, someone with thoughts beyond ore prices and tool upgrades.

There's also good news for fans of the lonely blacksmith: in Update 1.7, ConcernedApe confirmed that Clint and Sandy will join the roster of marriage candidates. Translating to: more dialogue, more heart events, and a real chance at a future for him.

How Gifting Works With Clint

As with every NPC in Stardew Valley, you can give Clint two gifts per week. The exception is his birthday on Winter 26, when you can give a third gift that counts for 8x friendship. Skipping his birthday is a wasted opportunity, especially early game.

His reaction to a gift is easy to read from his reply line:

  • Love: "Yes! This is exactly what I've been looking for!"
  • Like: "This is a fun gift. Thanks!"
  • Neutral: "Thanks."
  • Dislike: "Sigh..."
  • Hate: "This makes me depressed."

Unlike most villagers, Clint leans heavily toward mining materials. Bars and gems are your fastest path to his good side.

Loved Gifts

These give the biggest friendship boost per delivery:

  • Amethyst
  • Aquamarine
  • Artichoke Dip
  • Emerald
  • Fiddlehead Risotto
  • Gold Bar
  • Iridium Bar
  • Jade
  • Omni Geode
  • Ruby
  • Topaz

A Stardrop Tea also triggers a special line if you ever feel generous: "You're giving this... to me? I don't think I deserve it, but... thank you."

Liked Gifts

Solid filler if you don't have a loved gift ready:

  • Copper Bar
  • Iron Bar
  • Mining Monthly
  • All Universal Likes (flowers excluded)

Handing him the Mining Monthly triggers another unique reaction: "Oh, interesting... These books aren't very easy to come by in the valley. Looks like there's a lot of good tips in here. Thanks, [Player Name]."

Neutral Gifts

Nothing here will hurt you, but nothing here will help much either:

  • Chanterelle
  • Common Mushroom
  • Coal
  • Daffodil
  • Dandelion
  • Ginger
  • Gold Ore
  • Hazelnut
  • Iridium Ore
  • Leek
  • Magma Cap
  • Morel
  • Purple Mushroom
  • Refined Quartz
  • Snow Yam
  • Winter Root
  • All Universal Neutrals
  • All Eggs except the Void Egg
  • All Fruit except Salmonberry and Fruit Tree Fruit
  • All Milk

Disliked Gifts

  • Quartz
  • Salmonberry
  • Wild Horseradish
  • All Flowers except Poppy
  • All Universal Dislikes, with these exceptions: Coal, Copper Bar, Gold Bar, Gold Ore, Iridium Bar, Iridium Ore, Iron Bar, Omni Geode, and Refined Quartz

Hated Gifts

  • Holly
  • All Universal Hates

Clint's Heart Events

As your friendship grows, Clint occasionally sends you ore in the mail, usually a Copper, Iron, or Gold Bar. The higher his hearts, the more often you can expect a delivery.

As of Update 1.6 he has three heart events on the books. Update 1.7 will add more once he becomes marriageable, but for now the spoiler-light versions look like this:

Three-Heart Event (Part I)

Walk into the Stardrop Saloon on a Monday between 7 PM and 11 PM. A cutscene plays with four dialogue options on screen.

  • The first two options give +25 friendship.
  • The third option does nothing.
  • The last option is the best choice, granting +50 friendship.

If you want maximum value, pick the bottom option.

Three-Heart Event (Part II)

Clint quietly mails you the recipe for Algae Soup. Open the letter and the event is done. No saloon trip required.

Six-Heart Event

This one will not trigger if you've already married Emily, so plan accordingly. You also need to have cleared the first three-heart event.

With both conditions met, enter the town from Cindersap Forest between 9 AM and 6:30 PM. The cutscene shows Clint working up the nerve to talk to Emily about his feelings. It goes about as well as you'd expect from a man who communicates mostly with metal.

Seven-Heart Event

Another mail-based event. Clint sends you the recipe for Bean Hotpot. Read the letter and the event closes out.

Quick Tips for Faster Progress

  • Keep a stash of geodes and gems aside specifically for Clint. The mines refresh them faster than you'll burn through them.
  • Save your Iridium Bar gifts for late game weeks where you don't have a Gold Bar or gem on hand.
  • Mark Winter 26 on your in-game calendar. Even a basic loved gift on his birthday outperforms two weeks of regular gifting.
  • Don't gift flowers, ever. Poppy is the single exception, and even then he's not thrilled.

Clint isn't the flashiest villager in Stardew Valley, but he's one of the most useful early-game friendships you can build. A few well-timed gems, a birthday Gold Bar, and a couple of saloon visits later, you'll have a blacksmith who actually looks forward to seeing you walk in.
