Stardew Valley Bookseller: Schedule, Inventory, and Every Book Price

Other Games·March 24, 2024·10 min read

Stardew Valley Update 1.6 shipped with a heap of fresh content, including a new merchant who pairs neatly with the Mastery System. Meet the Bookseller, a traveling NPC who carries books that boost skill XP, raise movement speed, and unlock a few quality-of-life perks. Here is how to find him, when he visits, and what to spend your hard-earned gold on.

Who Is the Bookseller?

Added in version 1.6, the Bookseller is a wandering merchant who rolls into Pelican Town twice a month with a cart full of pricey reading material. His stock is genuinely useful, although your wallet may need a moment to recover.

Where to Find Him

The Bookseller sets up shop northeast of town, on the open field just above Joja Mart. Whenever he is around, a notification reading "The Bookseller is in town today" pops up on your screen so you do not miss him.

When Does He Visit?

The Bookseller is not a permanent resident of the valley. He drops by on randomized dates, but the calendar outside Pierre's General Store flags every upcoming visit. Check it at the start of each season so you can budget accordingly.

Books and Prices

The main attraction is, unsurprisingly, the books. Each one delivers a permanent buff once you read it. Below is the full inventory with current prices:

  • Price Catalogue (3,000g): Reveals the sell value of items in your inventory.
  • Combat Quarterly (5,000g): Extra Combat XP gain.
  • Mining Monthly (8,000g): Extra Mining XP gain.
  • Woodcutter's Weekly (8,000g): Extra Foraging XP gain.
  • Bait and Bobber (10,000g): Extra Fishing XP gain.
  • Stardew Valley Almanac (10,000g): Extra Farming XP gain.
  • Queen of Sauce Cookbook (10,000g): Adds any Queen of Sauce recipe you have not learned yet.
  • Book of Stars (15,000g): Bonus XP across all skills.
  • Way Of The Wind pt. 1 (15,000g): Boosts movement speed.
  • Friendship 101 (20,000g): Faster relationship XP gain with villagers.
  • Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick (20,000g): +1 Defense.
  • Horse: The Book (25,000g): Faster movement speed while mounted.
  • Ol' Slitherlegs (25,000g): Move faster through grass and crops.
  • Way Of The Wind pt. 2 (35,000g): Stacks an even bigger speed boost on top of part 1.

Trading Items for Books

If your bank account is having a rough week, the Bookseller also accepts certain materials and rare drops in exchange for specific books or items. The current trade table looks like this:

  • 2x Monster Compendium: 1x Slime Incubator.
  • 1x Book of Stars: 8x Fairy Dust.
  • 1x Stardew Valley Almanac: 2x Pepper Poppers.
  • 1x Bait and Bobber: 30x Deluxe Bait.
  • 1x Woodcutter's Weekly: 100x Wood.
  • 1x Mining Monthly: 20x Coal.
  • 1x Combat Quarterly: 1x Monster Musk.

Prioritize the books that match the skills you actively grind. Speed-related titles tend to pay back the fastest, while the Price Catalogue is a cheap pickup that saves a surprising amount of menu fumbling over a full save.
