Pelican Town is packed with characters who turn out to be more than they seem, and Alex sits near the top of that list. His early dialogue mostly revolves around pro athletics and the occasional rude jab, but anyone who sticks around eventually finds a quieter story underneath the gridball talk. This guide breaks down his gift preferences, walks through every heart event, and notes the dialogue choices that actually move the friendship gauge.

Alex lives in Pelican Town in the house southeast of Pierre's General Store, sharing the place with his grandparents Evelyn and George. Depending on the season you will usually find him doing reps near the beach or pacing through the town square.
First impressions are rough. At low friendship he throws out misogynist one-liners, and female farmers even get the line "If you weren't a girl I'd ask you to play catch." Charming, right? The bravado is a cover for something heavier, and players who push past the early dialogue learn what is really going on behind all the weightlifting and ball tossing.
Alex is one of the easier villagers in Stardew Valley to win over. His preferences are forgiving, the hate list is short, and you only need to remember two gifts per week. His birthday lands on Summer 13, which gives you a third gift slot that week with a big friendship multiplier.
His on-screen reactions follow the standard tiers:
Both are cooked dishes, so plan ahead. Complete Breakfast relies on dairy, eggs, hashbrowns, and pancakes, while Salmon Dinner needs a Salmon caught in fall plus amaranth and a kale leaf. Stockpiling one of them for his birthday is the cleanest way to push friendship fast.
Two items on the hate list is a remarkably small footprint, so unless you are actively shoving foraged Holly into his hands, you are probably safe.

Alex unlocks a new cutscene for every even-numbered friendship level up to ten, plus an extra fourteen-heart event reserved for spouses. Most of the dialogue prompts inside these scenes are flavor only, but a couple of them swing the gauge, so it pays to know which lines matter before clicking through.
Show up at the beach on any summer day. Alex throws you a gridball, your farmer fumbles the catch, and he opens up about wanting to become the first pro gridball player out of Stardew Valley. Pick whichever reply you like. Neither choice affects friendship.
Walk into the town between 9 am and 4 pm. You will catch Alex outside his house chatting with a dog named Dusty and admitting that people read him wrong. Both responses are flavor only and do not move the gauge.
Drop by Alex's house while he is home. The scene that triggers has him spiraling about going nowhere in life, and this one finally has lines that matter:
Note: Since version 1.3, a glitch can fire this event right as Alex walks out the door. Hitting "Skip" clears the issue.
Catch him at the beach on a sunny day. You will find him crying, and the scene moves on to the loss of his mother. Every reply is friendship-neutral, so answer however feels right for your farmer.
This one only fires when your friendship gauge with Alex is full. He mails you a letter asking to meet at the Saloon. Head over between 7 pm and 10 pm on the day the letter arrives, let the cutscene play out, and reply with whatever you prefer. Nothing here shifts the gauge in either direction.
