Starbound Server Hosting Lands on HolyHosting

Other Games·January 11, 2024·9 min read

Starbound is the kind of game where you can spend an evening building a base on a frozen planet and the next morning fighting space monkeys with a flame sword. The galaxy is yours, and now hosting a place to share it with friends is one click away.

HolyHosting is officially adding Starbound to its lineup of supported games. If running your own server has been on your list, this is the moment.

What Starbound Actually Is

Starbound is a 2D sandbox space adventure with procedurally generated planets, factions, and ruins. It often gets pitched as Terraria in space, which is fair enough as a starting point, but the comparison stops being useful pretty fast. Instead of biomes on a single world, you hop between entire planets, each with its own gravity, climate, fauna, and questlines.

No two playthroughs look the same, and a multiplayer server amplifies that effect. Every member of the crew lands on a different rock, and the universe ends up looking like a shared scrapbook of weird discoveries.

Why a Server Makes the Game Better

A dedicated server lets your group keep one shared universe alive 24/7, without anyone needing to act as host on their own PC. Once a base is built, it stays built. Once a planet is mapped, the map persists. The game opens up considerably once it stops being one person's save file.

A few of the things players spend most of their time on:

Endless Worlds

The procedural generator never really runs out. Ancient temples, hostile jungles, neon megacities, abandoned mining colonies. Pick a coordinate and warp.

Combat With Real Variety

Melee, ranged, energy weapons, elemental status effects. Fights are not deep in the Dark Souls sense, but the toolset is wide enough that two players almost never fight the same way.

Three Difficulty Modes

  • Casual: no hunger, no death penalty. Good for builders.
  • Survival: hunger and item loss on death. The intended baseline.
  • Hardcore: permadeath. One mistake and the character is gone for good, including the save slot.

Seven Playable Races

Human, Apex, Avian, Hylotl, Glitch, Floran, and Novakid. Each one has its own lore, ship interior, and starting questline. Glitch are medieval android knights that think they are in a fantasy novel. Apex are primates running an authoritarian state. Pick whichever fits the campaign your group wants to roleplay.

Crafting and the Matter Manipulator

Resources turn into furniture, gear, vehicles, and entire structures. The Matter Manipulator, the tool you start with, handles mining, painting, wiring, and most of the building work in one device.

Co-op and Mods

Multiplayer is where Starbound really stretches. Boss fights are far more manageable with backup, and the modding scene has produced everything from new races and weapons to total overhauls. A dedicated server is the cleanest way to keep mod versions synced across the group.

What You Get With a HolyHosting Starbound Server

  • Instant setup. No waiting around for a ticket queue. The server is provisioned and ready as soon as the order goes through.
  • 24/7 support. If something breaks, a real human is on the other side of the chat.
  • DDoS protection included. The only enemies you should be dealing with are in-game ones, not someone with a grudge and a botnet.
  • Automatic updates. New patches roll in without anyone needing to SSH into anything.

Starbound is built for long campaigns and shared universes, and a dedicated server is the way to actually run one of those without burning out the host. Pick a plan, point your friends at the IP, and start exploring.
