Squad lets you drop into one of a dozen armed forces, each with its own kit list, vehicle pool, and battlefield quirks. Picking the right group is half the fight. This breakdown walks through every playable faction, what it brings to a match, and the exact loadout each role unlocks.

Faction Categories at a Glance

Every faction in Squad is modeled on a real military, with a few exceptions for coalitions or composite groups. Behind the lineup sit three umbrella categories: BLUFOR, REDFOR, and Independent. The category decides which forces meet in standard matchups, and each individual army has clear strengths and rough edges.

No two factions play identically. The PLA fields agile vehicles but ships its riflemen guns that some players find underwhelming. Canada owns the only Sniper kit in the Specialist tree, yet its tank stable is mediocre. The Insurgents look ragged on paper but blend into civilian-style maps in a way the conventional armies cannot. Those trade-offs matter, especially in long matches where logistics and armor steer the outcome.

A quick legend before we go role by role. To keep loadouts readable, the bullet labels are shortened: Primary is the long gun, Sidearm is the holstered weapon plus any blade, Frags covers explosives and rocket payloads, Smoke lists smoke grenades and marker rounds, Med lists field dressings and medical kits, and Gear covers binoculars, tools, ammo bags, and field utilities.

BLUFOR Forces

Australian Defence Force

The Australian Defence Force joined the roster as official DLC in update 2.15. Before that, the Aussies only existed as a community mod. In-game, the faction represents the real Australian Army, Navy, and Air Force as a unified deployment.

Most kits run the EF88 Bullpup, a steady assault rifle with consistent handling and decent optic options. Combined with the Specter and ET552 sights the faction unlocks across its specialists, the ADF tends to reward players who already trust their aim and read of the map. New recruits will probably feel friction here. Coordination and shot discipline are not optional with this lineup, since the Aussies do not enjoy the same depth of armor that other BLUFOR groups bring.

British Armed Forces

Added in Alpha 11.0, the British Armed Forces are the in-game stand-in for the UK military of the same name. Their headline strength is glass: the SUSAT, LDS, and ACOG options give the Brits arguably the cleanest optic library in the game, which translates to ranged accuracy across most kits. The trade is armor. The British IFV and tank choices sit in the middle of the pack rather than at the top, so engagements tend to be won on infantry positioning rather than hull-down brawls.

Canadian Army

Canada arrived as a free DLC faction in Alpha 15.3. Its most distinctive feature is the Specialist tree: it remains the only force in the game with a true Sniper kit slotted in that category, running the C14 Timberwolf bolt-action with eight mags. Layer on a generous selection of long-range scopes and you get a faction that punishes opponents who think cover is a suggestion.

Armor is the soft spot. The Leopard 2A6M is a competent main battle tank but feels stiff next to the M1A2 or T-72B3, and it asks the gunner to be sharper. The good news is depth. The Canadian vehicle pool is wider than the Australians' or the Brits', so logistics commanders have more knobs to turn.

United States Army

The US Army is Squad's first conventional faction and one of the rare lineups where it is genuinely hard to point at a single weakness. Offensive output is high, defensive options are deep, and the kit list reads like a checklist of what a modern combined-arms team wants. The one mild gripe is that the M1126 APCs come with M2s rather than autocannons, so transport runs feel slightly less ferocious than equivalents in some REDFOR lineups. That is the kind of nitpick you reach for when there is not much else to complain about.

United States Marine Corps

The Marines are Squad's seventh conventional faction. They share parentage with the US Army on paper but diverge in feel once you load in. The most visible difference is the rifle bias: the Army leans on M4 carbines for short and medium ranges, while the Marines hand most infantry the M16A4 and the M27 IAR. Those longer barrels reward steady aim at distance and slightly slow down close quarters fights, which gives the faction a different cadence on big maps.

People's Liberation Army

The PLA dropped into Squad with update 4.0, making it the tenth playable faction and the eighth conventional one. The standout asset is the motor pool. PLA vehicles are nimble and flexible, which makes them excellent for hit-and-run pushes and quick repositions when a flank collapses.

The flip side sits in the rifle racks. The QBZ95-1 family handles fine, but a chunk of the playerbase finds the recoil profile and optic options less satisfying than what BLUFOR brings to the same fight. Strong squad communication and clever vehicle use will paper over most of those concerns.

People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy Marine Corps

Following the PLA in update 4.0, the Navy Marine Corps was added in update 5.0. That makes it Squad's 11th playable faction and the 9th conventional one.

The Navy Marines lean light. Their infantry runs assault rifles, carbines, and pistols rather than heavy hitters, which means short and medium range scraps are their wheelhouse. To play this faction well you need to close distance, which is easier said than done on maps with sprawling open ground. The reward is fast, mobile pushes that catch entrenched defenders flat-footed.

Russian Airborne Forces

The Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) joined the roster alongside the PLA Navy Marine Corps. Accuracy is the headline trait. Nearly all of the faction's vehicles ship with modern optics, and the Command tree swaps the standard Squad Leader role for the Squad Rifleman, which means leadership kits can field grenade launchers right out of the box. The VDV does not throw the heaviest explosive payloads in the game, but the balance across its kits and motor pool makes it a reasonable pick for veterans and rookies alike.

Russian Ground Forces

The Russian Ground Forces are the second conventional faction in Squad and the textbook example of a power-through-pressure army. The infantry runs carbines and assault rifles that hit hard at close to medium range, and in capable hands the recoil profiles are very manageable. The main gripe is optics: most of the gear lacks digital rangefinders, so estimating drop on longer engagements falls back to the gunner's eye.

Middle Eastern Alliance

The Middle Eastern Alliance mixes Western and NATO equipment with Russian-made weapons and vehicles. The cross-pollination gives the faction a distinctive feel, and disciplined squads can deal serious damage with it. The MEA is, at time of writing, the only force whose infantry runs full-power rifle rounds rather than intermediate assault cartridges. That means more damage per shot, traded against heavier recoil that punishes spray-and-pray habits.

Insurgents

The Insurgents are exactly what the name suggests. The faction operates in Middle-Eastern and South Asian theaters and runs a patchwork of weapons and vehicles cobbled together from multiple sources. Most of the firearms are older platforms, but that has its upside: on civilian-style maps the silhouettes blend in, which opens the door to ambushes that conventional squads would never get away with.

Irregular Militia Forces

The Irregular Militia Forces are Squad's second unconventional faction, slotting in after the Insurgents. They mix Eastern and Western kit while fighting on European-style theaters. The arsenal does not concentrate around a single platform: you can spec a kit with assault rifles, carbines, submachine guns, light machine guns, or pistols depending on what role you fill.

That broad menu is a double-edged sword. Spread the infantry thin and the militia struggles to project consistent firepower. Stack them into shock pushes and they punch above their weight. Vehicle-wise, the faction packs some of the most maneuverable light platforms in the game, including a few that mount multiple rocket launch systems, which is exactly as fun as it sounds.

Closing Thoughts

Picking a faction in Squad is less about which one is strongest and more about which one fits how you and your squad already play. Coordinated infantry with steady aim will get more out of the ADF or the Marines than a randomly assembled team will. Vehicle-heavy strategies favor the PLA or the Canadians, optic enthusiasts gravitate to the British, and players who want maximum chaos can lean into the Insurgents or the Irregular Militia. Spend a few rounds with each and the differences become muscle memory faster than the loadout lists make them look.
