Smalland Silk Farming Guide: Shears, Cocoon Locations, and Every Silkweave Recipe

Other Games·April 13, 2023·9 min read

In Smalland, silk is one of those materials you cannot really progress without. It feeds the Silkweave armor set, several Chitin-tier weapons, and a handful of tools once you spin it into thread. The catch is that silk grows on the homes of very large, very territorial spiders. This guide covers the shears you need, the spots worth farming, and every recipe silk currently unlocks.

Step 1: Craft the Right Shears

Silk cocoons will not give in to bare hands or a stone knife. You need at least Flint Shears, or any higher tier shears, to cut them open.

The Flint Shears recipe asks for:

  • 5x Fiber
  • 5x Resin
  • 5x Refined Wood
  • 8x Flint

Fiber, Flint, and Resin are scattered across the Smallfolk's world, so a normal looting run will cover them. Refined Wood is the one extra step: combine Wood with Seed Oil at a Stonecutter. Once the four materials are in your inventory, head back to the Stonecutter and craft the shears there.

Step 2: Find the Cocoons

Silk cocoons are concentrated on the western side of the map. The fastest way to confirm you have arrived is to look for spider enemies wandering around. If they are there, the cocoons are nearby, usually clinging to tall grass blades, walls, and tree bases.

Equip the Flint Shears, walk up to a cocoon, and snip. Each one drops raw Silk. Try to thin out nearby spiders first, or at least pull them away from the cocoons before you start, since the cutting animation locks you in place for a beat.

Note: if eight-legged company is not your thing, open the settings menu and turn on Arachnophobia Mode. Spiders get swapped for friendlier in-game models, with no impact on drops or combat behavior.

Step 3: Spin Silk into Thread

Raw Silk on its own does not slot directly into many recipes. Almost everything that calls for it actually wants Silk Thread, produced at the Loom & Spindle. Each thread costs:

  • 2x Silk
  • 1x Resin

Once you have a stockpile of thread, you can move on to the gear table.

Silk Thread Recipes

These are the current crafts that pull from Silk Thread:

  • Chitin Axe: 3x Silk Thread, 4x Refined Wood, 10x Chitin
  • Chitin Spear: 3x Silk Thread, 4x Refined Wood, 12x Chitin
  • Chitin Bow: 8x Fiber, 3x Silk Thread, 4x Refined Wood, 10x Heavy Chitin
  • Recurve Bow: 8x Fiber, 3x Silk Thread, 6x Refined Wood
  • Silkweave Torso: 8x Textile Patch, 6x Silk Thread, 3x Herptile
  • Silkweave Leggings: 8x Textile Patch, 4x Silk Thread, 3x Herptile Hide
  • Silkweave Mask: 3x Spider Head, 8x Textile Patch, 4x Silk Thread
  • Silkweave Arms: 4x Chitin, 4x Silk Thread, 3x Herptile Hide, 3x Insect Fur

Why the Silkweave Set Is Worth It

A full Silkweave set rolls in with 20 Protection, 12 Cold protection, +12% Piercing Resistance, and +8% Movement speed. The movement bonus alone makes long farming trips less painful. One condition: the NPC who crafts this armor only becomes available after you finish helping Skadi, so prioritize that questline if Silkweave is the end goal.
