Pyrite arrived with the Giant's Fall update and quickly became one of the most useful late-game materials in Smalland. It opens up a new weapon, a full armor set, and an extra building tier. The catch is that the deposits sit in a place most beginner gear cannot easily reach.
This guide covers exactly where to look, how to gather it without wasting an evening, and what the new recipes ask in return.

The deposits are scattered around the ruins close to the Historian NPC, in the southeastern part of the map. Getting there on foot is a punishing trip, so a flying mount is basically mandatory. Two options work well:
If your Smallfolk Vanguard build hits hard enough, the Hornet is often the faster pick. Whichever you go for, taming is required before you can even think about mining.
Heads up: the Damselfly Treat recipe only unlocks after you beat the King Stag Beetle and pick up the Ancient Clover Seal. Skip that fight and the Damselfly route is closed.
Once you are airborne and parked at the ruins, scan the walls for a golden, faintly shimmering stone. Most of the chunks are partially embedded into rubble and ruins, so they blend in. Tapping Antenna Vision (default key `V`) highlights them and saves a lot of squinting.
One last requirement: you need at least a metal pickaxe to actually break Pyrite. Anything weaker just bounces off.

The first time you pick up Pyrite, a fresh set of recipes unlocks at the workbench. Here is the full list, with materials per piece:
Wearing the entire Pyrite Armor set grants 33 base protection, 20 Cold Protection, and 12 Piercing Resistance. Solid numbers for biomes where the temperature alone can kill you faster than the wildlife.
Gathering Pyrite also unlocks the new metal building tier, so the trip is worth it even if you skip the gear. To actually assemble the armor pieces, head back to the Historian NPC once your inventory is stuffed with materials.
