Smalland Chitin Farming: Best Spots and Every Crafting Recipe

Chitin sits at the foundation of nearly every useful build in Smalland. Armor, weapons, tools, gear upgrades. If a recipe sounds remotely worth crafting, odds are it wants Chitin somewhere on the list. Luckily, it drops from a fair number of bugs, and at least one of them is plastered across most of the map.

Which Creatures Drop Chitin

Several hostile critters in Smalland carry Chitin in their loot pools. The full lineup is compact enough to remember without a notebook:

• Black Widow
• Grasshopper
• Green Beetle
• Lubber
• Nocturnal Grasshopper
• Sawyer Beetle
• Spider Matriarch
• Wasp
• Wasp Queen

For everyday farming, the Sawyer Beetle is the standout pick. It spawns across most regions, and it rarely puts up a serious fight if you bring the right tool to the fight.

Sawyer Beetles take bonus damage from piercing weapons and largely ignore edged ones. Early on, the Stone Spear is the easiest way to lean into that weakness. You can craft it at the Stonecutter with:

• 5x Fiber
• 4x Resin
• 4x Refined Wood
• 8x Stone

Best Locations to Farm Chitin

Chitin spawns are scattered across the Smallfolk world, but the Oak Forest biome is a comfortable starting ground for early runs. Just keep in mind that Sawyer Beetles tend to roam alone. After clearing one, you have two reasonable options: camp the same spot until it respawns, or sweep the surrounding area for the next solo target.

If the solo hunt feels slow, switch your target list to Wasps. They cluster in groups, which means more drops per engagement. The catch is obvious. A swarm hits much harder than a single beetle, so scout the area and pick your fights instead of charging in like the world owes you a backpack full of Chitin.

A Quick Note on Heavy Chitin

A lot of the late-game gear above asks for Heavy Chitin instead of the raw version. Heavy Chitin is not a drop. You produce it at the Furnace with 10x Chitin, 1x Clay Mortar, and 1x Charcoal per piece. Plan ahead and bank a stockpile before committing to anything in the Formic, Bone, or Ironwing trees, because those recipes burn through it fast.
