Bark is one of those Smalland resources you don't think about until the game refuses to let you craft anything decent without it. Pick up your first piece and a stack of new recipes unlocks, covering both sturdier housing and a few weapons worth keeping.
This guide walks through the tool you need before you can harvest Bark, where it actually spawns in usable amounts, and what you can build once your inventory starts filling up.

Bare hands and good intentions won't get you Bark. You need at least a Flint Axe, and that recipe assumes you've already done some legwork:
Fiber and Resin are easy enough. Both spawn around the starter zone near Herne and The Elder, so new players usually have a stack of each before they even notice.
Refined Wood is the awkward one. It takes processing and patience, but nothing exotic.
Flint is the real detour. It only spawns on the southern island, and you can't mine it with anything weaker than a Mandibular Pickaxe. If you skipped that craft, here's the shopping list:
The Bull Ant Mandible is the only piece that requires actual combat, so plan accordingly.

Smalland is mostly trees, which makes the location answer feel obvious. It isn't. The reliable Bark spawns aren't deep in the forest, they're on the beaches.
The northwestern coast in particular has dense Bark spawns spaced closely enough to make farming runs feel productive instead of tedious. Bring a stack of food, follow the shoreline, and clear nodes as you go.
One useful detail: harvesting Bark also has a chance to drop regular Wood. Treat it as a bonus rather than a primary source, but it does add up across a long run.

The moment you gather your first piece, Smalland fires off a wave of unlock notifications. Most of them are construction parts, the rest are weapons.
On the building side, Bark components are the upgrade path away from the basic wood and resin pieces you've been patching after every storm. Sturdier walls and floors mean fewer repair runs, which is the whole point of progressing past the starter shack.
For combat, three weapons rely on Bark as an ingredient:
Blowgun (crafted at the Stonecutter)
Poisoned Mace (crafted at the Workbench)
Poisoned Dart (crafted at the Workbench)
The Blowgun is the heavy Bark sink of the group, so if you're aiming for that craft specifically, plan a longer beach run before you sit down at the Stonecutter.
Between the housing upgrades and a respectable weapon list, Bark earns its place as a mid-game staple. Set up a base near the northwestern beaches if you can, and the resource basically farms itself while you're out doing other things.
