SCUM Lockpicking Explained: Tools, Timing, and Skill Tips

SCUM·June 24, 2025·9 min read

Loot drives almost every decision in SCUM, and a good chunk of the best stashes sit behind locked doors, crates, and gates. If you want what's inside, you'll need to learn the lockpicking system. It rewards patience over button mashing, and once the timing clicks, padlocks stop feeling like roadblocks.

How Lockpicking Works in SCUM

The mechanic boils down to one task: find the "sweet spot" inside a small minigame before the timer runs out. Every attempt is a race against the clock, and rushing or jiggling the pick is the fastest way to a broken tool. Your Thievery skill quietly shapes the difficulty by extending the timer and widening the sweet spot, so leveling it pays off across every lock you ever touch.

Tools You Can Use

Unlike games that hand you a single lockpicking set and call it a day, SCUM accepts a small toolbox of items:

  • Gloves
  • Screwdrivers
  • Bobby pins
  • Safety pins
  • Lockpicks
  • Advanced Lockpicks

Bobby pins and safety pins work on their own, but you can combine 1x Bobby Pin with 1x Safety Pin to craft an Improvised Lockpick. Advanced Lockpicks last longer and forgive small mistakes, making them the natural pick once you start tackling tougher loot.

Zappers and Why Gloves Matter

Some locks are wired with Zappers. Every failed attempt drains the picker's health, and the Zapper's tier decides how much damage you eat per slip up. Gloves are the workaround. They neutralize the shock but take wear instead, and higher-tier Zappers chew through glove durability faster. Pack a backup pair if you're working through a row of crates and don't want to leave with raw hands and a half-empty health bar.

Practicing With the Lockpicking Board

Picking real locks costs tools and risks health. The Lockpicking Board sidesteps both. You can hammer at it as long as you want without burning lockpicks or losing HP, which makes it the cheapest classroom in the game.

Craft one at the Workbench with:

  • 1x Wooden Plank
  • 1x Rubber Band
  • 1x Nails
  • 3x Padlock

Tips to Land the Sweet Spot

A few habits separate players who breeze through locks from the ones who keep snapping pins:

  1. Boost your framerate. Lockpicking is timing sensitive, and stutters cost attempts. Crouching or proning near the lock zooms the camera in, hides background clutter, and usually nudges FPS upward.
  2. Pick a direction and commit. Jiggling the pick back and forth almost guarantees a break. Choose left or right based on early feedback and stay there.
  3. Feather the key. Short, frequent taps in your chosen direction give finer control than holding the input. Constant pressure ramps up tool wear and invites a sudden snap.
  4. Start low and work up. Easy locks teach the rhythm. Once your timing is consistent, the same instinct carries over to higher tiers, where the sweet spot is narrower and the timer punishes hesitation.

Stick with these basics, keep a few spare picks in your pockets, and most locks in SCUM will start opening on the first attempt instead of the third.
