RimWorld Psychic Droner: Effects, Counters, and Best Gear

Other Games·July 14, 2024·52 min read

Few mechanoid clusters in RimWorld grind down a colony faster than a Psychic Droner. It does not shoot, it does not move, and yet it can quietly turn your best psycasters into miserable wrecks. Knowing what it does, how to break it, and which gear shields your pawns is the difference between a rough week and a colony spiral.

How a Psychic Droner Works and How to Destroy It

Killing the structure itself is the easy part. Send colonists with decent ranged weapons, focus fire, and the cluster falls apart. A destroyed Psychic Droner leaves behind a tidy pile of loot:

  • 60x Steel
  • 1x Component
  • 10x Plasteel
  • 4x Steel Slag Chunk

The catch is that while the Droner is still active, every nearby colonist takes a flat -22 Psychic Sensitivity penalty. That hit drops moods across the colony and shaves points off your psycasters' Neural Heat Limit, which is the cap on how much psycasting they can pull off before overheating.

In other words, the Droner does not need to hurt you directly. It just makes everyone slightly worse at everything until you remove it.

Why the Penalty Hurts More Than It Looks

The -22 sensitivity hit is not flat across the board. Gender, traits, genes, and existing gear can multiply or soften the effect, so two colonies with the same map setup can have very different experiences with the same Droner.

If you ignore the cluster for a season, expect a steady stream of bad mood thoughts, mental breaks from your weaker pawns, and psycasters who run out of neural heat halfway through a fight. None of that is fatal on its own. The problem is that it stacks on top of everything else the storyteller is already throwing at you.

A few practical ways to keep pawns functional until the Droner is rubble:

  • Psychic Foil Helmet. Cuts the wearer's Psychic Sensitivity by 90%, which almost wipes out the Droner's effect. You either buy one from traders for around 250 Silver or peel it off a dead raider.
  • Recreation infrastructure. A solid rec room, plenty of joy activities, and good meals soak up part of the mood debuff before it triggers a break.
  • Anesthetic sedation. Knocking out vulnerable pawns is heavy-handed, but a sleeping colonist does not feel the Droner. Useful for highly sensitive characters you cannot afford to lose.
  • Pack up and leave. Caravaning to a new tile is the nuclear option. Reserve it for situations where the cluster is sitting on top of something you genuinely cannot dislodge.

For anything short of that last option, the foil helmet plus a focused assault is almost always the cleanest fix.

Several of these sources are locked behind specific RimWorld DLCs, so if a trait, gene, or piece of apparel above does not appear in your game, expansion ownership is usually the reason.

Final Thoughts

A Psychic Droner is less a fight and more a deadline. Throw firepower at it, keep a foil helmet on the colonist who simply cannot afford to be in a bad mood, and use the table above to plan loadouts before the next cluster lands. With the right gear and a quick response, a Droner stops being a crisis and turns into a fairly generous loot drop.
