Few resources hold a colony together quite like the humble Component. It powers turrets, keeps the lights on, builds prosthetics, and eventually carries you off the planet. If you run out at the wrong moment, your tribe of caffeinated survivors gets very unhappy very fast. This guide walks through every reliable way to stockpile Components in RimWorld and the full list of recipes that consume them.

Ways to Obtain Components in RimWorld

There are four practical sources for Components, and a well-run colony usually mixes all of them so it never has to pick a favorite.

Crafting at the Fabrication Bench

The most predictable supply chain runs through the Fabrication Bench. Each Component costs 12x Steel and the assigned colonist must be at Crafting Level 8 or higher. A single unit takes 5,000 ticks to finish, which works out to about one minute and twenty four seconds of in-game time. Building two benches and assigning a dedicated artisan turns Components into a renewable resource you can plan around.

Mining Compacted Machinery

Scattered across most maps, compacted machinery tiles look like dark, metallic veins embedded in stone. Each block mined yields 2x Components by default, though difficulty settings and developer options can change that. If your starting area looks empty, send a colonist into nearby rock formations. These deposits often hide behind a few layers of granite, and uncovering them is usually worth the pickaxe time.

Deconstructing Ship Chunks

When ships crash near your colony, they leave behind chunks of debris that are surprisingly generous. Order a constructor to disassemble each chunk and you walk away with 20x Steel plus 5 to 6 Components. Encourage your storyteller to keep sending raids, mech clusters, and other unwelcome guests, because their wreckage doubles as a Component delivery service.

Buying from Traders

Merchants and orbital caravans occasionally stock Components. They are a fine emergency option, but rarely the most efficient use of silver. Plasteel, advanced components, and unusual medicines tend to be better picks since the regular Components are easy enough to craft or scavenge between trade visits. Save the wallet for things the map will not hand you for free.

Quick Tips for a Steady Supply

  • Mark every compacted machinery tile you uncover, even if you do not need Components right now. Future-you will appreciate the reserve.
  • Keep at least one colonist climbing the Crafting skill toward Level 8 so the Fabrication Bench is never idle.
  • Send a constructor out to deconstruct mech and ship debris as soon as a fight ends. Leaving chunks on the map is leaving Steel and Components on the table.
  • Build a small buffer (around 40 to 60 Components in storage) before starting a power expansion or weapon production cycle, since several recipes consume them in bulk.

Manage those four sources well and Components stop being a scarcity puzzle. They turn into the quiet backbone behind every turret line, hydroponics row, and eventual escape from the rimworld.
