Once Human Beastmaster Guide: Taming Pets, Traits, Food, and Best Animals

Other Games·July 16, 2025·31 min read

Once Human Version 2.0 added a class system, and Beastmaster is the choice for players who want animals to do more than look cute near the base. This class lets Meta-Humans tame wildlife and use pets for combat, resource gathering, and other jobs.

Beastmaster Basics in Once Human

New players can choose a class after finishing the tutorial. Existing characters on different Once Human servers or scenarios can pick one after launching the game following the Version 2.0 update.

Beastmaster changes how animals behave around you. Wild animals no longer flee when you approach, and you can see their thoughts, which occasionally makes the wasteland feel like it has a strange little group chat.

The class also gives two starting items: a Beast Whistle and one starter animal. Use the starting animal item in your inventory to choose between a Boar, Bear, or Wolf.

Each starter has a different role:

  • Boar: Strong for resource gathering
  • Bear: A frontline tank that attracts enemies and absorbs damage
  • Wolf: A combat support pet with high melee damage plus stamina and weakspot damage bonuses

The best starter depends on what you want most. More tameable animals can be found across the map, and they can roll different traits. Pets can also equip special gear to improve certain stats or abilities.

How to Tame Animals

Approach an animal and check its details to see whether it can be tamed. Beastmaster makes this easier because animals do not immediately run or turn hostile when you get close.

After choosing a target, damage it until its health becomes critical. It may try to flee, so stay close and finish the taming setup.

Next, hit the injured animal with a tranquilizer. Crossbow users can craft Tranquilizer Arrows with 20x Steel Ingot, 20x Engineering Plastic, 15x Rubber, 10x Log, and 25x Stardust Source. You can also use Tranquilizer Throwing Needles, crafted with 3x Steel Ingot, 8x Engineering Plastic, 5x Rubber, and 3x Stardust Source. Both items are made at an Immediate or Advanced Supplies Workbench.

Animal Rarity and Trait List

Tameable animals have rarity grades from S to C. S Tier animals come with four traits, while C Tier animals only have one. Traits can affect combat, production, taming, survivability, and resource yields.

Tameness, Water, and Food

Tamed animals can only be summoned inside your territory or base. Once there, provide food and water to raise Tameness. Commands become available after Tameness reaches at least 20%.

Water is simple, since most pets can drink Dirty, Boiled, or Purified Water. Food takes more setup. Unlock Animal Trough schematics through Animal Taming in Memetics, then build the trough with 50x Log, 12x Sintered Block, 15x Aluminum Ingot, and 15x Adhesive. Place it and interact with it to supply food.

Preferred diets include:

  • Bear: Fish, Fruits, and Vegetables
  • Boar: Fish, Fruits, and Vegetables
  • Capybara: Grains, Fodder, Vegetables, and Fruits
  • Crocodile: All Meats
  • Deer: Grains, Fodder, Fruits, and Vegetables
  • Buck/Doe: Grains, Fodder, Fruits, and Vegetables
  • Eclipse Wolf: All Meats
  • Ewe: Grains and Fodder
  • Flamingo: Fish, Shellfish, and Seaweed
  • Fox: Meat and Fruit
  • Leopard: All Meats
  • Polar Bear: Fish, Fruits, and Vegetables
  • Rabbit: Fodder, Fruits, and Vegetables
  • Ram: Grains and Fodder
  • Sea Turtle: Grains, Seaweed, and Fish Fillet
  • Snapping Turtle: Grains, Seaweed, and Fish Fillet
  • Snow Fox: Meat and Fruit
  • Wild Buffalo: Grains and Fodder
  • Wolf: All Meats

Each animal also has favorite foods. Feeding a favorite gives a better Tameness boost:

  • Bear: Fish
  • Boar: Apple and Orange
  • Capybara: Sage and Honeysuckle
  • Crocodile: Meat and Fish
  • Deer: Wheat and Corn
  • Doe: Wheat and Corn
  • Eclipse Wolf: Large chunks of Meat
  • Ewe: Sage and Honeysuckle
  • Flamingo: Hawthorn Berry and Tomato
  • Fox: Small chunks of Meat
  • Leopard: Large chunks of Meat
  • Polar Bear: Fish
  • Rabbit: Sage and Honeysuckle
  • Ram: Sage and Honeysuckle
  • Sea Turtle: Seaweed and Fish
  • Snapping Turtle: Seaweed and Fish
  • Snow Fox: Small types of Meat
  • Wild Buffalo: Sage and Honeysuckle
  • Wolf: Large types of Meat

You can also turn ingredients into feed at an Electric Stove or Kitchen Set, which is usually more efficient:

  • Meat Pellet Feed: 5x Rabbit Meat, 3x Deer Meat, 3x Beast Meat, 3x Pork, 3x Goat Meat, 3x Raw Meat, or 3x Bear Meat
  • Grain Concentrate Feed: 10x Corn or 10x Wheat
  • Herbal Green Feed: 10x Coneflower, 10x Sage, 10x Bellflower, 10x Honeysuckle, 10x Scarlet Calamus, or 10x Yellow Lotus

Summoning and Commanding Pets

Equip the Beast Whistle to your hotbar. Press its assigned key, place the pet's blueprint where you want it to appear, and summon it. While the pet is active, use the Beast Whistle again to issue commands.

Best Beastmaster Pets

The Boar is one of the best utility picks because it improves resource farming. Look south of the Winding Ridge Teleportation Tower if you want to find one, ideally with an S Tier roll.

The Bear is a standout tank. To find a bear pack, travel to the Moonlake Teleportation Tower, then go west toward the cave in the mountain at northwest Chalk Peak.

The Wolf is the best choice if you want a damage-focused companion and did not already choose it as your starter. Fast travel to Blackheart's Bay Teleportation Tower and head south to locate a small wolf pack.

The Leopard is not available as a starting Beastmaster pet, but it has a large hitbox and can hit some floating enemies, including drones, more effectively than smaller animals. The best place to find leopards is Wish Land, between Wish Land - West and Wish Land - East. That region is far from early starting areas such as Deadsville, so plan the trip accordingly.
