Counter-Strike 2 replaced CS:GO on Steam and opened the door for new players to jump into Valve's team-based shooter. The basic question is simple: does CS2 cost anything to play?

Yes. CS2 is a free upgrade to CS:GO, as Valve states on the official Counter-Strike 2 website. New players can download it through Steam and play the game's core features without buying the base game.
That free version is not the only account option, though. CS2 also offers a paid upgrade called Prime Status.
Prime Status is a premium account upgrade for Counter-Strike 2. In most supported countries, it costs about $15 and is a one-time purchase, not a monthly or yearly subscription.
Prime players are eligible to be matched with other Prime players. They can also receive Prime-exclusive rewards, including item drops, souvenir items, and weapon cases.
To check whether an account has Prime, look for the Prime-enabled badge on the CS2 main menu. Players who want the upgrade can buy Prime Status from the game's Steam store page.
Prime is most useful for players who expect to play CS2 regularly or want a more competitive matchmaking experience. Because Prime requires a paid purchase, Prime-only queues can be less attractive to trolls, throwaway accounts, and players who go AFK with nothing to lose.
That said, Prime is not a magic shield against bad teammates. Prime users can still encounter non-Prime players if they choose free-to-play lobbies. For casual players, the free version may be enough. For frequent CS2 players, the one-time Prime upgrade is easier to justify.
