HumanitZ Beginner Survival Guide for Day One

Other Games·February 16, 2024·28 min read

HumanitZ drops players into a hostile zombie survival sandbox filled with undead enemies called Zeeks, scarce supplies, and plenty of ways to make one bad decision snowball into a very short life. This beginner guide focuses on the systems that matter most when starting a new save.

HumanitZ Beginner Guide: Core Systems to Learn

HumanitZ shares some familiar survival-game basics. Crafting, for example, works by collecting the right materials and using the correct station to make an item. Instead of repeating every genre standard, this guide focuses on professions, settings, spawn points, the HUD, skills, resources, combat, hunting, fishing, and first-day habits.

Professions in HumanitZ

Character creation includes cosmetic options, but profession choice has the biggest gameplay impact. Starter clothing does not provide defense, though it can help with cold weather. Professions provide unique advantages, so pick one that fits how you want to survive.

  • Unemployed: Starts with no useful skills or perks.
  • Mechanic: Repair Kits are 50% more effective.
  • Junior Biodiesel Researcher: Fuel Cans provide 50% more fuel.
  • Emergency Medical Technician: Medical Items are 25% more effective.
  • Apprentice Gunsmith: Gun Repair Kits are 50% more effective.
  • Amateur Boxer: Unarmed attacks deal 300% more damage.
  • Farmer: Eating raw vegetables gives an increased amount of Seeds.
  • Food Service Worker: Food Items are 15% more effective.
  • Sunday Fisherman: Fishing chances are significantly increased.
  • Car Salesman: Trader negotiations are improved.
  • Outdoors Man: Hunted animals provide more meat.

New players who want a safer start may prefer Emergency Medical Technician, Mechanic, or Food Service Worker. Players planning to fish, hunt, or fight unarmed can choose more specialized options.

Game Settings

Solo players and multiplayer server admins can adjust many world settings before playing. These options shape difficulty, loot, respawns, and pacing.

  • Perma death: Deletes the save after death.
  • On death drop: Controls which items drop on death.
  • Clear infection on death: Removes infection after respawning.
  • PVP: Toggles PvP in the world.
  • Air drop: Toggles air drops.
  • Weapon break: Toggles whether weapon durability can drop.
  • Sleep passes time in multiplayer: Controls whether multiplayer sleeping advances time.
  • Respawn loot: Toggles whether loot returns or remains gone.
  • Loot respawn time: Sets how long loot takes to respawn.
  • Pickup respawn time: Sets pickup item respawn timing.
  • Loot rarity: Changes how rare loot is.
  • Air drop every: Sets the air drop interval.
  • Zombie difficulty: Changes Zeek speed, health, and damage.
  • Hostile human difficulty: Changes hostile human speed, health, and damage.
  • Zombie amount multiplier: Changes Zeek spawn amounts.
  • Human amount multiplier: Changes hostile human spawn amounts.
  • Zombie dog multiplier: Changes how often Zeek dogs appear.
  • Zombie respawn timer: Changes Zeek respawn timing.
  • Human respawn timer: Changes hostile human respawn timing.
  • Animal respawn timer: Changes animal respawn timing.
  • Starting season: Sets the starting season and may require a reload to apply.
  • Days per season: Sets how many days pass before seasons change.
  • Day duration: Changes real-time minutes for an in-game day and night.
  • Vital drain: Changes how quickly vitals drain.
  • Companion health: Changes companion health.
  • Companion damage: Changes companion damage.
  • Dog companion count: Changes how many dogs a player can keep as companions.

For a first save, avoid stacking every brutal option at once. HumanitZ is already happy to punish careless players without extra help.

Spawn Points

Before entering the world, choose one of four starting points:

  • Starter Spawn: Includes a guaranteed drivable car, starter gear, and plenty of loot.
  • Inland Spawn: A harder start with many nearby Zeeks.
  • Coast Road: Includes several points of interest.
  • West Road Spawn: Has lots of loot, but the area is infested with Zeeks.

Starter Spawn is the friendliest option for learning the basics. Inland Spawn and West Road Spawn are better once you are comfortable with combat and retreating.

Understanding the HUD

The HUD shows the information needed to stay alive. The main elements are:

  • 1. Compass: Appears only when a compass is equipped and shows facing direction.
  • 2. Clock: Appears only when the Pocket Watch is equipped and shows in-game time.
  • 3. Stats: Shows Health, Hunger, Thirst, and Stamina from left to right. Health reaching 0 kills the character. Hunger or Thirst at 0 causes gradual health loss. Stamina drains while running, vaulting, using tools, and fighting.
  • 4. Status: Shows current debuffs.
  • 5. Temperature: Shows body temperature.
  • 6. Held Item: Displays the weapon, tool, or item currently held.
  • 7. Hotbar: Holds specific item types: two large tool or weapon slots, one sidearm slot, one small tool or melee weapon slot, and one quick slot item.
  • 8. Equipped item status: Shows information such as firearm ammo.
  • 9. Equipped item durability: Shows durability for the held tool or weapon.

Skills and Skill Points

Skills are unlocked with Skill Points earned by gaining XP and leveling up. Each level grants 1 Skill Point, which can be spent on Survival, Combat, and World skills.

Some useful skills cost more than one point. Powerlifter, for example, increases maximum carried weight but requires 4 Skill Points. That means saving points for several levels instead of spending every point immediately.

Resource Gathering Basics

Survival depends on knowing where basic materials come from. These are common early resources and sources:

  • Car Battery: Destroy broken-down cars. Scrap Metal can also appear from this action.
  • Cement: Check store boxes, often found in garages.
  • Electronics: Search abandoned vehicles.
  • Fan Belt: Inspect car hoods. Fuel Pumps may also be found there.
  • Iron: Mine dark-gray stones with a Pickaxe.
  • Nails: Craft from Scrap Metal or find them in car trunks.
  • Wood: Chop trees with an Axe to get Logs, then process Logs at a Table Saw into Wood.

Mark useful locations on the map, especially if the resource can respawn. Future you will appreciate not wandering in circles with an empty backpack.

Combat Basics

A character must be in a combat-ready stance before attacking with weapons or fists. By default, ALT toggles this stance. Pressing the attack button, left click by default, or zooming with a weapon, right click by default, also enters combat-ready stance.

Do not fight every Zeek you see. Early survival often comes down to choosing when to run, when to sneak, and when to use stamina instead of pride.

Hunting and Fishing

HumanitZ includes hunting and fishing for food. Most land animals can be killed with various weapons, including fists. Fishing requires a rod, bait, and a fishing spot.

Fishing works like this:

  • Cast the baited line at a fishing spot.
  • Press Reel In when the line tenses.
  • Reel while the fish relaxes.
  • Stop reeling when the line tenses again.
  • If successful, the fish goes into your inventory.

Beginner Tips for Surviving Day One

  • Outrun Zeeks when outnumbered. Many undead are slow, but groups can still corner careless players.
  • Use the bow. Arrows are quiet and usually avoid alerting nearby Zeeks.
  • Place map markers. Mark useful loot, resource nodes, vehicles, and safe areas.
  • Learn the controls early. Fumbling with inputs while Zeeks are close is a reliable way to become a cautionary tale.

A good first day is simple: choose a forgiving spawn, gather basic tools, avoid unnecessary fights, watch your vitals, and build a mental map of nearby resources. If you find a working vehicle, treat it as a major advantage, but do not let it replace basic scouting. Fuel, repairs, safe parking, and a backup route still matter. Check containers before moving on. Surviving is easier once the world feels less like a maze full of teeth.
