How to Install Custom Songs in Clone Hero

Adding custom songs is one of the best parts of Clone Hero. The community has created a huge library of charts, so expanding the game can be as simple as downloading a song pack, placing it in the right folder, and telling the game to scan for it.

Adding Songs to Clone Hero

Clone Hero is a freeware rhythm game with an active charting community. Before downloading anything, use trusted sources and avoid random files from places that look like they were assembled during a power outage.

Good starting points include Custom Songs Central, Chorus Encore, RhythmVerse song files, and the Clone Hero Download Sheet master list.

After downloading a song, extract it if it arrives as a .zip, .rar, .7z, or similar archive. Each playable song folder should include an audio file, a song.ini file, and either notes.chart or notes.mid. Without those pieces, Clone Hero may not recognize the track correctly.

Where to Put Clone Hero Songs

On Windows, the Songs folder is usually inside the main Clone Hero folder under Documents, unless it has been moved. If Clone Hero is running in portable mode, place songs inside the Songs folder located in PlayerData within the game's install folder.

On Mac, the Songs folder is normally found inside the Clone Hero folder in the user's Home directory.

On Linux, check the ~/.clonehero directory for the Songs folder.

Scan Songs In-Game

Once the extracted song folders are in the right place, launch Clone Hero. From the main screen, open Settings, go to the General tab, and choose Scan Songs. Confirm the scan and wait for it to finish. Large libraries can take longer, especially if the folder has enough tracks to frighten a spreadsheet.

After the scan, return to the main menu and open Quickplay. If the files were placed correctly and include the required chart data, the new songs should appear in the list.
