How to Get Gunpowder in Windrose: Crafting Recipe, Pirate Drops, and Sulfur Nodes

Other Games·April 15, 2026·10 min read

Guns are loud, satisfying, and shockingly useless without gunpowder. If you're sailing the seas of Windrose with a low supply, this guide covers both refill routes: crafting it yourself or looting it from pirate camps.

Crafting Homemade Gunpowder

The DIY recipe asks for two ingredients: Ash and Sulfur. Neither is rare, but one is far less convenient than the other.

Ash comes from burning wood inside a Charcoal Kiln. Since you're probably running the kiln for charcoal anyway, the ash piles up as a side benefit. No extra effort, no extra resources.

Sulfur is the harder half. It's a raw world resource you have to mine from Sulfur Nodes, which spawn in the Coastal Jungle and Foothills biomes. The nodes are easy to spot once you know what to look for: yellow cracks running through the rock. Breaking them open requires an Iron Pickaxe.

If you don't have iron tools yet but already sail with cannons mounted, you can blast Sulfur Nodes apart from the deck of your ship. Slightly more dramatic, equally effective.

Building the Millstone

You won't combine anything into gunpowder until you have a Millstone, and unlocking it follows a small chain:

  1. Discover Corn somewhere in the world. This unlocks the Millstone Parts schematic at your workbench.
  2. Craft 1 Millstone Parts plus 15 Wood to build the Millstone itself.
  3. Feed it 25 Ash and 25 Sulfur to produce Homemade Gunpowder.

That is a chunky cost per batch, so plan your shooting habits with the ratio in mind.

Farming Gunpowder From Pirates

No Iron Pickaxe yet? No Millstone? You can still keep the guns fed by letting other people produce the gunpowder for you.

Sailor-type enemies at Blackbeard pirate camps drop Homemade Gunpowder directly. The real prize, though, sits in the chests scattered around those camps. A single chest can hold up to 8 Gunpowder, which makes raiding a camp far more efficient than grinding individual mobs.

Pirates and their loot chests respawn daily, so a cleared camp is just a future farm. Rotate through a handful of known locations and you'll keep a steady supply without ever touching a Sulfur Node.

To cut travel time between runs, set up Fast-Travel Bells near the camps you visit most often.

Managing Your Stock

Gunpowder is far easier to burn through than to replace. Every shot, every cannon volley, every ship repair using firearms eats into your reserves.

A few habits worth picking up early:

  • Use melee weapons on weak enemies and save bullets for threats that actually shoot back.
  • Hit pirate camps on a rotation rather than waiting until you're empty.
  • Grab Sulfur whenever you pass through the Coastal Jungle or Foothills, even if you don't need it right now.

If you want to play full pirate gunslinger, accept that a chunk of your playtime will go into camp raids and node mining. The arsenal is worth it.
