How to Fix CS2 Stuttering and Common Performance Problems

General·October 10, 2023·16 min read

Counter-Strike 2 is built around timing and precision, so stuttering feels bad immediately. A missed frame during a duel is not exactly a tactical feature.

CS2 still has some performance issues, but many stutters come from local settings, hardware limits, or drivers. The best approach is to test one likely cause at a time instead of changing every setting and hoping the smoke clears.

CS2 stuttering causes and fixes

Start with system requirements, then move through graphics settings, GPU drivers, and display mode. If one change helps, keep it. If it does nothing, revert it before testing the next fix.

Check CS2 minimum requirements

A PC below the minimum specs can stutter no matter how many settings are changed. CS2's listed minimum requirements are:

Windows

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: 4 hardware CPU threads, Intel Core i5 750 or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: 1 GB or larger DirectX 11-compatible video card with Shader Model 5.0 support
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 85 GB available space

SteamOS and Linux

  • OS: Ubuntu 20.04
  • Processor: 4 hardware CPU threads, Intel Core i5 750 or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: AMD GCN+ or NVIDIA Kepler+ with current Vulkan drivers. VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library support is strongly recommended.
  • Storage: 85 GB available space
  • Sound Card: Highly recommended

If your system barely meets these requirements, focus on lower settings before trying more specific fixes.

Set CS2 to high performance in Windows

Windows may not always assign the best GPU profile to CS2, especially on systems with integrated and dedicated graphics.

  • Open Steam and go to your Library.
  • Right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties.
  • Select Installed Files, then click Browse.
  • Copy the location of the CS2 executable.
  • Open the Windows Start menu and search for Display Settings.
  • Open Graphics from the Display Settings page.
  • Use Browse under custom app options and select the CS2 executable.
  • Set the graphics preference for CS2 to High Performance.

Restart the game and test a match or practice session.

Lower demanding in-game graphics settings

CS2's upgraded visuals are one of its biggest changes, especially effects like smoke behavior. They can also be expensive on weaker systems.

Try these performance-focused settings:

  • Shader Detail: Low
  • Motion Blur: Disabled
  • Global Shadow Quality: Low or Very Low
  • Multisampling Anti-Aliasing Mode: None
  • FXAA Anti-Aliasing: Disabled
  • Wait for Vertical Sync: Disabled
  • Particle Detail: Low
  • Ambient Occlusion: Disabled
  • High Dynamic Range: Performance
  • FidelityFX Super Resolution: Disabled

After changing settings, play long enough to confirm whether the stutter is actually reduced.

Update graphics drivers

Outdated GPU drivers can cause stutters, crashes, and inconsistent frame pacing.

NVIDIA

  • Right-click the NVIDIA GeForce icon in the taskbar.
  • Open NVIDIA GeForce Experience.
  • Select the Drivers tab.
  • Click Download for the available driver.
  • Let the download and installation finish.

AMD

  • Open the AMD Driver and Support page.
  • Download and install the AMD Driver Auto-detect tool.
  • Run the tool.
  • Click Install when it finds the needed graphics driver update.

Restart the PC after a driver update if the installer recommends it.

Try Windowed mode or disable fullscreen optimizations

Fullscreen mode can sometimes cause stuttering, tearing, or other display problems. In CS2, open Settings, go to the Video tab, find Display Mode, and switch to Windowed if it is not already selected.

You can also disable fullscreen optimizations through the CS2 executable. Right-click the executable, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and disable fullscreen optimizations. Then launch CS2 again and compare performance.
