How the Leveling Block Works in Astroneer

Other Games·November 4, 2023·7 min read

The Terrain Tool is excellent at making holes, ramps, and the occasional regrettable crater. The Leveling Block exists for the opposite job: creating a clean, flat patch of terrain where items and structures can sit properly.

Leveling Block Crafting Recipe

The Leveling Block first appeared as a Creative Mode item in Update 1.10.9 and later became available in Adventure Mode in Update 1.20.265.

Crafting it is simple. Open the Backpack Printer and spend 1x Soil to make one Leveling Block. No advanced stations are required, so it is easy to keep a few around once Soil Canisters are in regular use.

How to Use a Leveling Block

A Leveling Block flattens a small section of ground by aligning it to the planet's voxel grid. The result is a smoother surface without the bumps and uneven ridges left behind by normal terrain edits.

To use it, place the block on the area that needs to be leveled. Hover the cursor over the block to preview the affected area, then press the Use key, which is F by default on PC. The block will activate and reshape the ground underneath it.

In Adventure Mode, each Leveling Block can be used up to 10 times. In Creative Mode, it has unlimited uses.

Angle and Alignment Notes

The leveled patch starts at a 60-degree angle. It is possible to create 45-degree or 90-degree results, but the block follows the planet's voxel grid and cannot be manually rotated at the time of writing. That makes precision placement a little fussy, especially on uneven terrain.

For wider flat sections, pair the Leveling Block with a Narrow Mod. The Narrow Mod is crafted from the Backpack Printer with 1x Zinc, which is made by refining 1x Sphalerite in the Smelting Furnace.

The Leveling Block is best used for small foundation fixes, tidy ramps, and placement cleanup around bases. For large construction projects, expect to use multiple activations or several blocks unless Creative Mode is doing the heavy lifting.
