Foundry is a relaxed factory-building sandbox in Early Access, but a calm game can still bury new players under machines, foundations, recipes, and conveyor belts. Carl, the in-game AI companion, explains the basics well enough to get a factory started. This guide focuses on the early details that are easy to miss.

Carl will walk you through mining ores, placing foundations, smelting materials, and setting up your first production steps. Once those basics are covered, the following tips help make the opening hours cleaner and less confusing.

When a new game begins, Carl starts talking almost immediately after the ship lands. Before rushing into resource gathering, stay near the ship for a moment.
Look at the ship door and the game will show a Customize Character prompt. At the time of writing, customization is limited to changing the base color of your robot and mining drill. It is still useful, especially on a multiplayer Foundry server where several players may otherwise look a little too similar.

The mining drill is one of the most important early tools in Foundry. Every player starts with one, and it handles most early resource gathering.
It is also useful for shaping the world around your factory. You can dig underground, create tunnels, clear space, and remove terrain or objects that would otherwise block a cleaner layout.

Foundry is open-ended, but recipes do not all appear at once. Early crafting options are limited to basic materials, blocks, and stations. More recipes unlock as tutorial tasks are completed.
This also applies in Creative Mode. Players still need to follow the tutorial to unlock basic crafting recipes.
Hand crafting is straightforward: start the craft, wait for it to finish, and the item will appear in your inventory if there is enough backpack space. Later, the tutorial leads to building a research server. After placing it, craft science packs and feed them into the server to unlock additional recipes.
One useful note: an issue where ore miners sometimes stopped working was fixed in Hotfix #1.

Foundry avoids the one-block-at-a-time pace found in some sandbox games. To place several blocks quickly, hold the left mouse button by default while aiming across the terrain, then release to confirm placement.
This makes foundation building much faster and helps when expanding a production floor. Your mouse button may briefly become the hardest-working employee in the factory.

Early factories rely on biomass burners for power. The nice part is that you do not need to connect power lines to nearby stations.
Instead, place the biomass burner on the same foundation as the machines that need power. Stations on that connected foundation receive power automatically.

When Carl asks you to connect drone miners to a smelter, loaders become important. Place loaders at the input and output points of the smelter and drone miner stations.
Make sure the Building label intersects with the station's material entry or exit point. Then place conveyor belts beneath each loader and rotate belts until items move in the intended direction.
