Farming Simulator 22 Chicken Guide: Coops, Feed, Eggs, and Profit

Other Games·August 6, 2024·13 min read

Chickens are one of the easiest animals to manage in Farming Simulator 22. They are cheap to buy, simple to feed, and do not require a complicated production chain before they start giving something back.

This guide explains how chicken coops work, how to buy and feed chickens, and how to make money from eggs.

Chicken Coops in Farming Simulator 22

Chickens are low-maintenance livestock, but they still need housing and food before they become productive. Healthy hens produce eggs, while neglected chickens mostly produce disappointment.

Chicken Housing Options

Chickens need housing, and Farming Simulator 22 gives you two main options:

  • Pasture: Costs $6,000 and holds up to 30 chickens.
  • Coop: Costs $79,000 and holds up to 360 chickens.

This guide focuses on the coop, but the basic care rules are similar. Before placing either structure, choose reasonably flat land. The game can place animal buildings on uneven terrain, but it charges extra for leveling, which can quietly eat into your budget.

How to Buy Chickens

You can buy chickens from the in-game shop. On PC, press P to open the shop, choose Animal Dealer, then select the chicken housing where the animals should be delivered.

You can also walk to the floating paw icon beside the coop and press R by default. This opens the animal purchase menu directly for that building.

Chicken options are:

  • Young Hen: $5
  • 6-month-old Hen: $50
  • Rooster: $5

The game adds a delivery fee when animals are bought remotely. To avoid that fee, buy chickens from the shop location on the map and transport them yourself. It takes more work, but early farms often care about every dollar.

Checking Chicken Coop Status

Open the menu with Escape by default, then select the Animals tab. This screen shows the condition of your chickens and coop.

Useful details include:

  • Value
  • Age
  • Health
  • Reproduction cycle
  • Productivity
  • Eggs produced
  • Food consumed

Only hens lay eggs. Roosters are optional and mostly decorative, so buy them only if you want the coop to look more complete.

Feeding Chickens

Chickens in Farming Simulator 22 only need grain. Valid feed sources include:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Sorghum
  • Chicken feed from the shop

If you do not want to grow or harvest grain first, buy chicken feed from the shop. It is found in the Big Bags section under Big Bag Pallets.

To feed the coop, load grain or chicken feed into a trailer, drive to the feed icon beside the coop, and unload it. On PC, press I by default to overload the food into the coop.

Making Money From Chickens

Healthy hens eventually lay eggs. Those eggs can be sold to traders, and different buyers may offer different prices. Open the Sales or Prices section in the in-game menu to see which station currently pays the most for eggs.

Eggs are not the highest-value product on their own. For better profit, you can use eggs with butter, sugar, strawberries, and flour at the bakery to produce cake. Cake sells for more, but it also requires more ingredients and planning.

Chickens are still a strong beginner animal because their startup costs are low and their feeding needs are simple. On a shared HolyHosting Farming Simulator 22 server, they also make a good side project while other players manage larger fields or cattle.
