DayZ Night Length and Server Time Cycle Explained

Other Games·September 12, 2023·7 min read

DayZ nights are not just darker days with worse visibility. They change how players travel, loot, fight infected, and avoid anyone lucky enough to own night vision. Knowing how long the dark lasts helps you decide whether to push inland or hide in a shed and pretend that was the plan.

How Long Does Night Last in DayZ?

By default, DayZ uses server time to decide the in-game day and night cycle. If a server ran time at the real-world pace, night could last up to 12 real hours. That is possible in the system, but it is not common in actual play because most official and community servers use time multipliers.

Server administrators can adjust the day and night cycle speed with multipliers from 1x to 8x. At the fastest 8x setting, the night cycle lasts one eighth of the standard length, which brings a full night down to about 1.5 real hours.

Daytime uses the same logic. Depending on the server settings, a day can also run anywhere from roughly 12 hours down to 1.5 hours.

Admins can tune those values separately to shape the server experience. A server built around survival pressure might keep nights longer, forcing players to manage light, sound, and movement carefully. A more travel-focused server may shorten nights and stretch daylight so players spend more time looting and roaming. On a HolyHosting DayZ server, those choices usually come down to the kind of pacing you want for your community.

How to Change Day and Night Length in DayZ

Only server admins can change a server's day and night speed. If you have access to the server configuration, the usual process is:

  • Stop the DayZ server.
  • Open the server configuration files and find `serverDZ.cfg`.
  • Edit `serverDZ.cfg` with a text editor such as Notepad.
  • Locate the Time Acceleration setting.
  • Change the day cycle speed. A 12-hour day cycle uses a value of `1`.
  • Locate Server Night Time Acceleration.
  • Change the night cycle speed.
  • Save the file and restart the server.

Mods can also alter server and in-game time. One example is the Eternal Day mod on Steam Workshop. As with configuration changes, only admins can manage those mod settings. If you use mods, check that they match the current client version and update DayZ if the mod requires it.
