DayZ Blood Types, Compatibility Chart, and Safe Transfusion Steps

Blood in DayZ is separate from health and energy. It affects a character's physical condition, and transfusions can save a survivor, but only when the donor and receiver are compatible.

Randomly giving blood is a fast way to turn emergency medicine into a second emergency.

What blood types do in DayZ

Blood types are based on the presence or absence of A and B antigens on red blood cells. DayZ uses that real-world idea as a gameplay mechanic.

Each character receives a random blood type during character creation. It does not carry over to a new character spawn, and it does not transfer between separate hives.

Blood type determines who can donate to or receive from your character. If a survivor receives incompatible blood, they suffer a fatal hemolytic reaction. In-game, that means the receiver rapidly loses blood over time until they fall unconscious.

DayZ blood type distribution

DayZ assigns blood types through an algorithm. The distribution is:

• O+: 43%
• A+: 23%
• O-: 10%
• B+: 9%
• A-: 5%
• B-: 3%
• AB+: 2%
• AB-: 2%

How to check your blood type

Use a Blood Testing Kit to identify your character's blood type.

Open your inventory and place the Blood Testing Kit in your hands. Hold the action button until the on-screen circle completes one full revolution. Once the test finishes, your blood type appears in the blood drop icon at the lower-right part of the screen.

How to donate blood safely

First, confirm that the donor and receiver are compatible. Then equip a Blood Bag and hold the action button until the circle completes one revolution.

Drawing blood removes a significant amount from the donor, so make sure the character is well-hydrated and has enough energy before doing it.

Next, combine an IV Start Kit with the filled Blood Bag to make a Blood Bag IV Kit. Walk up to the receiver while holding the kit. If positioned correctly, an option appears to use the Blood Bag IV Kit on the other player.

Hold the action button again until the circle completes. A successful transfusion instantly restores 500 Blood to the receiver.

DayZ blood type compatibility list

Use the donor blood type first, then choose only one of the compatible receiver types listed below.

• O- donor: Compatible with O- only.
• O+ donor: Compatible with O- and O+.
• A- donor: Compatible with O- and A-.
• A+ donor: Compatible with O-, O+, A-, and A+.
• B- donor: Compatible with O- and B-.
• B+ donor: Compatible with O-, O+, B-, and B+.
• AB- donor: Compatible with O-, A-, B-, and AB-.
• AB+ donor: Compatible with O-, O+, A-, A+, B-, B+, AB-, and AB+.

If the receiver's blood type is not listed for that donor, do not use that blood for the transfusion.
