Picking a weapon in DayZ is rarely a clean spreadsheet decision. Damage matters, but so do ammo access, recoil, attachments, range, rarity, and whether the gun helps in the fight you are actually in. A great sniper rifle will not save much dignity if the problem is two meters away and swinging.

This DayZ weapon tier list weighs overall combat value rather than raw damage alone. The ranking considers firepower, rate of fire, range, handling, attachment support, and general usefulness in real survival situations.

Based on the real-world SV-98, the VS-89 in DayZ is a bolt-action sniper rifle known for high damage and range. It fires 762x54 rounds, features a 10-round magazine, and excels in medium to long-range combat despite a low rate of fire.
It sits at number 10 because the learning curve is steep. Players who are comfortable with sniper rifles can still make the VS-89 shine in precise long-distance fights.

Also known as CZ 550, the CR-550 Savanna bolt-action rifle merges features of the M70 Tundra and CR-527. Chambered for .308 rounds, it offers high damage and effective range, although its rate of fire is slower than most weapons in DayZ.
A Hunting Scope makes it much more dangerous at range, and the 10-round detachable magazine gives it a practical rhythm compared with slower long guns.

The M70 Tundra, also known as the Winchester, is a renowned sniper rifle in DayZ. It is valued for reliability and strong long-range performance.
This five-shot bolt-action rifle uses .308 rounds, delivering serious damage at long ranges. Its effectiveness is amplified with a Hunting Scope, allowing for precise sniping. Additionally, the option for an improvised suppressor enhances stealth during engagements, making it a formidable choice for players once found.

The Mosin Nagant is a five-shot bolt-action rifle that uses 7.62x54mmR rounds, making it a popular choice among different players since DayZ's release. It excels at long distances due to its power and accuracy.
Its slow bolt-action cycle and limited capacity hold it back in close quarters, so carrying a secondary weapon is wise.
Additionally, the Mosin 91/30 can accommodate various attachments to enhance performance. Alternatively, players can modify it into an “Obrez” configuration for better maneuverability in tight situations.

Based on the AUG A3, the AUR AX is akin to the AUR A1 in DayZ, allowing NATO optics and sights. It’s a selective-fire bullpup assault rifle chambered for the 5.56x45mm round, introduced in patch 1.15.
The AX features updated magazine docking and accepts various Western accessories, including standardized suppressors and universal flashlights, perfect for nighttime combat. With a long barrel and Picatinny rails, it surpasses the A1's CQB barrel and fixed scope, making it one of the best assault rifles in the game.

The M4-A1 is an assault rifle that uses 5.56x45mm rounds and features extensive customization options through various attachments. It is harder to acquire than many guns, but its damage, range, and attachment options keep it among DayZ’s strongest firearms.
Although quite effective in dealing with different enemies, this weapon is primarily designed for short to medium-range combat. Lucky survivors may find this rifle with a polymer handguard and buttstock, though attachments vary. Note that only one M4-A1 can exist on the map at a time, excluding player-owned weapons.

The LE-MAS Bullpup Assault Rifle, also known as the FAMAS, excels in close quarters with its high rate of fire and serious damage. Its stats and handling make it one of the strongest assault rifles in DayZ.
Altering this weapon’s handle improves visibility at a slight durability cost but has no significant penalties. The compact design allows for semi-auto, burst, and full-auto modes, using 5.56x45mm rounds.

The LAR, also known as the FN FAL, is a highly sought-after battle rifle in DayZ, firing .308 WIN rounds. It belongs to the Assault Rifle category and is revered for its power and effectiveness at all ranges. Although significantly difficult to find, players have a better chance of finding it in helicopter crash sites and military convoys.
The LAR excels when equipped with a gun optic, making it one of the game's best weapons, even to the untrained. Its high damage can kill players with a single shot to the chest beyond 50 meters and penetrate helmets at close ranges.

The VSD, also known as the SVD, lands just short of the top slot. It combines fast semi-automatic fire with high damage, even for players who are not perfectly accurate.
Chambered in 7.62x54mmR rounds, it serves as a late-game military marksman weapon, feared when combined with optics and an AK suppressor. Developed in the early sixties in the Soviet Union, it features a 10-round magazine and excels in squad-level shooting, with capabilities for night vision optics and suppressors.

The top pick here is the DMR, also known as the M14. This Designated Marksman Rifle fires powerful .308 rounds and is dangerous at a wide range of distances. Classified as a sniper rifle, it offers high damage, exceptional accuracy, and rapid semi-automatic fire.
Despite its extreme rarity, players can one-shot enemies (human or otherwise) while wielding this beast of a firearm. The DMR inflicts significant health and shock damage, capable of knocking out armored players at distances of up to 810 meters, outperforming the LAR and SVD. Its superior stats make it a lethal weapon, even in the hands of moderately skilled players.
