CS2 Mic Not Working? Settings and Driver Fixes to Try

General·October 16, 2023·6 min read

Voice comms matter in Counter-Strike 2. A silent microphone can turn clean callouts into awkward pantomime, and CS2 teammates are rarely known for patience.

Some players have reported microphone problems in CS2. The right fix depends on what is causing the issue, so start by checking your PC and input device before changing random settings.

How to fix a CS2 microphone that is not working

The most common causes are input level problems, multiple active microphones, or outdated audio drivers. Try the fixes below one at a time, then relaunch CS2 and test voice chat after each change.

Lower sensitivity problems: raise your mic level

CS2 can require a stronger input signal than some other games. If your microphone works elsewhere but not in CS2, the game may simply be failing to pick up your voice unless you speak loudly.

Close CS2, then open Control Panel in Windows. Go to Sound, choose the Recording tab, right-click the microphone you use, and select Properties. Under Levels, increase the microphone boost to around +20 dB.

After applying the change, open CS2 again and test whether teammates can hear you.

Multiple microphones: remove the extras

If your PC has more than one microphone connected, CS2 may pick the wrong input device. This can happen with webcams, headsets, USB microphones, monitor audio devices, or virtual audio tools.

Close the game and unplug or disable every microphone except the one you want to use. Launch CS2 again and test voice chat. If that fixes the issue, reconnect your other devices only after setting your preferred mic as the default input in Windows.

Outdated drivers: install the right audio driver

Old or generic audio drivers can cause CS2 input problems. Windows Update may say everything is current, but that does not always mean the best device-specific driver is installed.

Visit the website for your headset, microphone, motherboard, or sound device manufacturer. Download the driver that matches your exact model, install it using the manufacturer's instructions, then restart the PC if prompted.

Once the driver update is complete, return to CS2 and test the microphone again. If the mic still fails, the next place to check is your Steam voice input and Windows default communication device settings.
