Create and Add a Steam Game Login Token

General·May 20, 2026·10 min read

Overview

Some Steam dedicated servers need a Steam Game Login Token, often shortened to GSLT, before players can connect normally. This applies to games such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, while other Steam games may not require one at all.

A GSLT is generated through Steam for a specific game server account. The token identifies that server to Steam, which is why leaving it blank can cause connection problems. It is not hidden in the usual Steam client menus, because apparently one settings page would have been too generous.

The process has two parts: find the game's Steam App ID, then create and paste the token into your server panel.

Find the Steam App ID

  1. Open the Steam Store page for the game you are hosting.
  2. Look at the page URL and find the number after `/app/`.
  3. Copy that number, since it is the game's App ID.

For example, a Steam Store URL usually includes a section like `/app/730/`. In that case, `730` is the App ID.

Generate the Steam Game Login Token

  1. Go to Steam's Game Server Account Management page.
  2. Sign in with the Steam account that will manage the server token.
  3. Enter the App ID for the game.
  1. In the Memo field, add a short note so you can identify the token later. A server name, game name, or location note works well.
  2. Select Create to generate the token.

Keep the memo practical. If you manage several servers, names like `CSGO Public 1` are much easier to recognize later than `test2-final-real`.

Add the Token to Your Server

After the token is created, copy it from the Login Token section on Steam's Game Server Account Management page.

Next, open your HolyHosting server panel and go to the server's customization or settings area. Look for a field named Game Server Login Token, GSLT, or similar. It may be under an Other or Server Settings section depending on the game.

Paste the token into the field, save the change if required, then restart the server from the main panel. The restart is what applies the new token to the running server.

Common Problems

Steam Account Login Fails

A Steam account is required to create the token. If the login fails, confirm the account details first, then check whether Steam is having service issues or maintenance. Steam Guard prompts can also block the process until completed.

The Token Setting Is Missing

Check the full customization or server settings page, especially any sections labeled Other. If the field is not available anywhere, the selected game may not use a Steam Game Login Token.

Final Notes

Steam Game Login Tokens are required only for certain dedicated Steam servers. CS:GO commonly needs one for player connections, while games such as Terraria do not. Once the correct App ID is used and the token is saved in the server settings, restart the server and test joining again.
