ARK: Survival Evolved

Best ARK: Survival Evolved Mods for Structures, Creatures, Maps, and Biomes

ARK: Survival Evolved·June 25, 2023·12 min read

ARK: Survival Evolved has a huge modding scene, with options that add creatures, maps, building systems, biomes, and full gameplay overhauls. Sorting through thousands of Workshop pages can take longer than taming a stubborn rex, so this list focuses on five standout mods that are useful, fun, or large enough to reshape a save.

If you run an ARK server through HolyHosting, test large mod stacks carefully before opening them to players, especially when creature overrides or heavy maps are involved.

Top ARK Mods to Try

These choices are not the final answer for every player. Different groups value different things, from cleaner building to harder PvE progression. Still, each mod below offers a strong reason to install it.

5. Structures Plus (S+)

Structures Plus is built for players who want cleaner, more flexible construction. It expands ARK's building options with extra structures and practical placement tools, making it easier to create anything from a tidy base camp to a fortress that says please raid someone else.

The mod adds features such as stackable foundations, improved snapping, and options to hide wires and pipes. It also includes several quality-of-life changes:

  • Silenced structures
  • Lockable crafting stations with PIN codes
  • Gas structures that can also use electricity
  • Automatic gates, doors, and trapdoors
  • Map-specific engrams available across all maps
  • S+ versions of vanilla engrams with reduced engram costs

4. Primal Fear

Primal Fear is a major PvE expansion that changes how many dinosaurs behave and adds a large number of new creatures. It is designed for players who want ARK to feel more dangerous and progression-heavy.

Creatures can appear in several tameable categories, including Alpha, Apex, Buffoon, Celestial, Demonic, Elder, Elemental, and Toxic. Bosses also expand with classifications such as Primal, Origin, and the Creator.

Note: The Primal Fear developers warn that the mod is not compatible with other mods that override vanilla creatures. Plan your load order carefully before combining it with other major creature packs.

3. Thieves Island

Thieves Island is a large map and biome mod, measuring roughly half the size of ARK's original Island map. It adds five major biome areas: Beach, Jungle, Grassland, Mountain, and Redwoods.

The map also includes Scorched Earth dinosaurs and allows players to build bases, structures, and placed elements in the sky.

Warning: Thieves Island is graphically demanding. Lower-end systems may struggle to run it smoothly.

2. The Center

The Center is one of ARK's best-known expansion maps and remains a strong choice for players who want a new adventure without changing the game into something unrecognizable.

Notable features include:

  • A floating island
  • A full underground world with its own ecosystem
  • A lava biome
  • Underwater air bubbles
  • A new end-game boss with unique rewards

The Center also includes the regular biomes from The Island, and its map assets were hand-drawn by the developers.

1. Paleo ARK: Legends Expansion

Paleo ARK expands the vanilla PvE creature experience with Paleo variants and new species. It is not compatible with many other creature mods, but it does work alongside Kraken's Better Dinos and ARK Additions: The Collection.

Paleo-type dinosaurs can spawn alongside their vanilla counterparts. For example, a wild raptor pack may include a Paleo variant with a different size or color. The mod also adds the Evolved Tyrannosaur and Tarbosaurus to vanilla ARK.
