Is Astroneer Cross-Platform and Cross-Play?

Astroneer entered Early Access in December 2016 as a stylized sandbox adventure about exploring and surviving in space. Since it is available on multiple systems, many players ask the same practical question: is Astroneer cross-platform, and can everyone play together?

Where Can You Play Astroneer?

Astroneer is a cross-platform game in the sense that it is available on several different systems. Players can find it on:

• Nintendo Switch
• PlayStation 4 and 5
• Xbox One
• Xbox Cloud Gaming
• Microsoft Windows PC

There is also a way to play Astroneer on mobile, but not as a separate native mobile version. That option uses PS Remote Play for PlayStation users or Xbox Remote Play for Xbox users.

Does Astroneer Support Cross-Play?

Cross-platform and cross-play are not the same thing. Cross-platform means the game exists on multiple systems. Cross-play means players on those different systems can join online multiplayer together.

Astroneer does support cross-play, but there are restrictions. At launch, cross-play was limited to PC and Xbox players through dedicated servers. Since then, compatibility expanded to include other systems in some cases.

For example, PC players can play with PS4 players, but the PC player needs to create or rent a server so both versions can connect properly. The PC player must also use the Steam version of Astroneer rather than the Microsoft version.

Xbox players have another limitation. According to the dedicated server information, Xbox Astroneer players cannot connect to a non-authenticated server. They need to create or rent a supported server for smooth online cross-play with players on other systems.

Nintendo Switch is the major exception. Astroneer on Switch does not support cross-play, so Switch players can only play with other players on Nintendo’s console at the time covered by the source.
