Setting a Custom Server Name in Arma 3

Why the Server Name Matters

In a crowded browser, your Arma 3 server has roughly two seconds to convince someone to click. The name is the hook. A clear, distinctive label helps the right players find you and remember you the next time they fire up the game, whether your community is a tight friend group or a public Wasteland lobby.

Arma 3 lets you pick any hostname you want, and the HolyHosting panel makes editing it a couple of clicks instead of an SSH expedition.

Editing the Hostname

Before touching the config, the server has to be offline. Hot-swapping the name on a running instance does not behave well.

  1. Sign in to your HolyHosting control panel.
  2. Open the server and stop it. Wait until it reports fully offline.
  1. In the side menu, go to Config Files, then open Server Config.
  2. Find the `hostname` line.
  1. Replace the text between the quotation marks with the name you want.
  2. Hit Save at the top of the page.
  3. Go back to the main panel view and start the server again.

That is the entire workflow. The next time the instance comes online, the new name is what everyone sees.

Where the New Name Shows Up

Once the server is running, the change propagates to every place Arma 3 advertises the instance.

In-Game Server Browser

The most obvious spot is the in-game list, where players also see the difficulty setting, the current map, and whether anti-cheat is enforced. A descriptive name here often matters more than a fancy mod list.

Steam Server Browser

The Steam external browser pulls the same hostname, alongside the live player count and current map. Players who filter Arma 3 servers from outside the game itself find you here.

Wrap-Up

Changing the name is reversible at any moment. Test something playful, switch to a serious operations callsign the next week, rebrand around a wipe cycle. The process is the same each time: stop the server, edit the field, save, restart. If you tweak it again later and the change does not seem to appear, give Steam a minute to refresh its cache before assuming something broke.
