How to Add Mods to a Modpack in Minecraft
Minecraft allows players to completely transform gameplay through the use of Forge or Fabric modifications. These mods can introduce new creatures, building blocks, and countless other features. Most players use modpacks — large collections of mods that create a unique experience. However, sometimes certain features you or others want are missing from a modpack. This leads players to add additional mods to the pack, making it even larger.
The process for doing this varies depending on your launcher, which can be a bit confusing for new modders. With this in mind, Holy Hosting has created this tutorial to show you how to add mods to a modpack using popular launchers.
Finding and Downloading Mods
Before attempting to add mods to any modpack, make sure you’ve downloaded the correct ones. In other words, ensure the mods match your game version, modloader type (Forge or Fabric), and include all required dependencies.
We highly recommend reviewing our guide on how to safely and properly download the desired mods. Also, make sure to save these files in an easily accessible location on your computer — this will make adding them to your modpack much easier.
Adding Mods to a Modpack
Whether you’re customizing small or large modpacks, adding extra mods is something most players try at some point. Doing so changes certain aspects of the pack, which some may feel are necessary for a better gameplay experience. Others simply experiment with mod combinations to see what works best for them.
Regardless of your reason, the process differs for each launcher — which can cause some confusion. Fortunately, all major launchers have user-friendly interfaces that make it easy. Choose your launcher from the sections below to start adding more mods to your chosen modpack.
CurseForge App

Open the CurseForge App, then go to My Modpacks.
Locate and select your desired modpack from the list.
On the next screen, click the three vertical dots on the right.
From the options, select Open Folder to view the modpack files.
Find and open the mods folder.
Drag and drop the desired mod files into this area.
Technic Launcher
Launch Technic Launcher and navigate to the Modpacks section.
From the list, find and select the modpack you want to modify.
Click Modpack Options in the top-right corner.
In the dialog box, click Open to reveal the modpack files.
Locate the mods folder and place your desired mod files inside.
ATLauncher
Open ATLauncher and go to the Instances section.
From your downloaded modpacks, locate the one you want to edit.
Once found, click Open Folder near the bottom-right corner.
Open the mods directory and place your mod files inside.
Voidswrath Launcher
Open VoidLauncher and select your desired modpack on the left.
Click Edit Modpack on the far right.
Then choose Edit Mods to open the mod files.
Drag and drop your desired mods into the newly opened window.
FTB App
Launch the FTB App and go to the Library section.
Find and select your downloaded modpack.
Click the three vertical dots next to the Play button.
Hover over Open, then select Mods Folder to access the files.
Drag and drop your mods into this window.
Common Issues
Minecraft Crashes
If Minecraft or your launcher crashes after adding mods to a modpack, you may have missed a required dependency. These are mods that rely on others to function properly. Sometimes multiple dependencies are needed in addition to the main mod.
Usually, you can find them under the Relations tab on the mod’s CurseForge page, or mentioned in the description. However, crashes can also occur if the mods are incompatible with each other — this is rare, but it cannot be fixed due to how those mods are designed.
Connection Refused
Make sure you’ve also added the same mods to your server when adding them to your launcher — this is necessary for a stable connection. Otherwise, you’ll receive a “mismatched mod list” error.

Essentially, both the server and client must have the exact same mods, unless some are specifically marked as client-side only. Once all modifications are properly aligned on both ends, try joining the server again to see if it works.
