How to Set Up Administrators on a Rust Server

Other Games·March 22, 2026·6 min read

When you own a Rust server, adding administrators is an important step for moderation. Whether to track or remove cheating players, or simply to manage the server, having administrators is essential.

Getting Steam ID:

1. Access the SteamID website.

2. Enter the desired user's Steam profile link.

3. Copy the steamID64 number from the page.

You are now ready to add the player as an administrator.

Administrator Roles in Rust:

- ownerid: Grants access to all commands, as well as the ability to add or remove other administrators.

- moderatorid: Grants access to all commands, but cannot add or remove other administrators.

Setting Up Administrators:

1. Access the HolyHosting server panel.

2. Access the console on the left side.

3. In the console, enter [role] [64_bit_steam_id] [reason/username].

- Replace the role with one of the ones mentioned above, enter the SteamID64 number, and select a reason or username.

- Example: `ownerid 76561198169700921 Daltondorf`

4. Enter the `writecfg` command in the console to save the changes.

5. If the player was on the server when adding admin access, the player must rejoin the server.

Removing Roles:

To remove administrators or moderators at any time, go back to the console and run the respective command similar to the one above:

- `removeowner [64_bit_steam_id]`

- `removemoderator [64_bit_steam_id]`

Then, make sure to use `server.writecfg` to save the changes and allow them to take effect in-game.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, adding administrators to a Rust server is an excellent option to ensure the server is constantly operating at its best.
