Tick Speed in Minecraft
Minecraft offers an infinite world full of activities, but some players want to speed up their experience. The tick speed allows you to do just that, as it controls processes like crop growth, mob spawning, and redstone mechanics. Increasing it makes everything happen faster, enhancing gameplay in single-player worlds or servers. Holy Hosting explains in its guide how to easily change this setting.
Ticks in Minecraft
Ticks are the unit of time in Minecraft and control aspects such as tree growth, mob spawning, redstone, and physics. Without them, the game wouldn’t function. The default tick speed is 3 in Java and 1 in Bedrock. When modifying it, caution is advised, as excessively high values can cause errors. If you’re looking to improve performance, Holy Hosting recommends checking out its server optimization guide.
Change the Tick Speed

Before changing the tick speed, you need to enable cheats or be an operator, as this adjustment alters the game’s natural mechanics. It’s important not to use excessive values (like 99999) and to increase the speed gradually to find the ideal setting. Improperly adjusting this option can cause serious issues in your world or server.
Java Edition
In Minecraft Java Edition, changing the tick speed is straightforward, but it requires cheats to be enabled. If you didn’t enable them when creating the world, you can do so later or edit the world files using NBTEditor. Once enabled, you can use a specific command to adjust the tick speed and change the game’s pace.
Singleplayer
Open Minecraft and navigate to your desired world from the main menu.

Make sure cheats are enabled if you haven’t done so already, as they are required for this process.
Once in the game, type /gamerule randomTickSpeed [value] in the chat.

Repeat this until you’re satisfied with the tick speed in your single-player world.
Multiplayer
Go to your Holy Hosting server panel and become an operator if you haven’t done so already.
Next, join your Minecraft server and run the command /gamerule randomTickSpeed [value] in the chat.

Optional: Run this command with a slash in the Console area of your server panel.
Continue doing this until you’re satisfied with the tick speed on your world.
Bedrock Edition
Unlike Java Edition, Bedrock makes it easy to enable cheats in a single-player world without much effort. However, on a server, you need to manually enable this feature through our user-friendly panel. Once done, you can use the same command as before to change the tick speed in Minecraft. Follow one of the sections below to get started.
Singleplayer
Launch Minecraft and enter your world, then make sure that Cheats are enabled.

Note: This option is located near the bottom of the World category in Settings.
Then, change the Random Tick Speed value to whatever you desire.

Optional: Alternatively, run the command /gamerule randomTickSpeed [value].
Repeat this process until you’re satisfied with the tick speed in your world.
Multiplayer
Go to your Holy Hosting server panel, then click on Configure Files near the top-left corner.

Click on Bedrock Server Settings, then set Allow Cheats to Enabled.

Then, click the Save button at the bottom and select Restart Now when prompted.
Next, become an operator on the server and join with your account.
Continue typing and executing /gamerule randomTickSpeed [value] in the chat.

Keep doing this until you’re satisfied with the results.
Uses of Tick Speed
Tick speed accelerates processes in Minecraft, such as crop growth and mob spawning. It’s especially useful for farming, as it drastically reduces wait times. It can also be applied to redstone machines, allowing you to create faster and more complex mechanisms.
For example, clocks and repeaters become more precise, aiding in trap functionality. There are many other activities you can enhance by increasing tick speed, so start experimenting with it.
Common Issues
Unable to Change Tick Speed
If you can’t change the tick speed, make sure cheats are enabled or that you have operator permissions on multiplayer servers. Then, run the command again, ensuring you type randomTickSpeed correctly (in Bedrock, capitalization doesn’t matter). If the error persists, double-check the command syntax and the permissions on your world or server.
My Server Keeps Crashing
If your server crashes after changing the tick speed, the value is likely too high or there are too many active processes. It’s best to increase it gradually to avoid overloads. If the server won’t start, you can restore a backup from the panel or manually edit the value using NBTEditor after downloading the world. If you need assistance, the Holy Hosting Support team can help you.
The World Is Lagging
If your world starts lagging after increasing the tick speed, reduce it or revert to the default values to improve performance. You can also optimize the world by limiting events and activities, such as disabling redstone machines, lowering the render distance, or removing farms. If the problem persists, it’s best to undo all changes made to the tick speed. Conclusion
