How to Analyze a Timings v2 Report

Minecraft·March 22, 2026·8 min read

Prerequisites:

You can create a timings report by following our guide. Once you have the timings report, follow the steps below to learn how to analyze it.

How to read a Timings report:

Now that the report has been generated, you can open it. Upon doing so, you will be presented with one of the 2 variants.

Please note that this guide describes how to analyze a Timings v2 report, which is generated from PaperSpigot server types. If you are using a Spigot server, a Timings v1 report will be generated instead, which we will not cover in this guide.

1) Check Server TPS (Ticks Per Second):

- Go to the "Avg" tab under the results bar and select it.

- Then, check the value called "Minecraft::Full Server Tick". If it is above 18 TPS (make sure to verify this across all time ranges), your server is performing well and likely does not have a TPS issue.

2) Check Entity Count:

- Too many entities can consume a lot of your server's processing power. To check this, go to "Regions" --> "Count" and look at the "Avg" column. This shows the average number of entities loaded per region.

- If there are more than 2000+ entities present on your server at the same time, this can result in poor performance. Try reducing your entity counts by clearing entities or by adding mob-limiting plugins.

3) Check Average Player Count:

- Players as entities consume valuable resources to process their actions on the server. Therefore, having more players than your plan can handle is a guaranteed way to cause lag. We recommend upgrading your server plan if you consistently exceed your plan's player limit.

- To check the number of players in the selected region, go to "Regions" --> "Count" and look for the "Player" value.

4) Try to Resolve Alerts:

- PaperMC Timings reports will alert you if some settings are not optimized or are outside their recommended values. Some alerts are easy to fix, such as changing a setting in your server configuration.

Conclusion:

In rare cases, it may happen that you cannot find conclusive evidence of what is causing lag on your server.

There are some ways you can resolve lag that does not show up in your timings report. We would recommend checking the following guides:

- Optimize bukkit.yml to reduce lag

- Optimize spigot.yml to reduce lag

- Optimize paper.yml to reduce lag

- How to fix lag by reducing view distance on a Minecraft server

- Using plugins to reduce lag on your Minecraft server

You can also simply upgrade your server to a higher plan, which can instantly solve your lag problems. Check out our Minecraft hosting plans to find the right one for your server.

If your server continues to experience lag, you can contact our expert support team, providing them with your timings report so they can help you identify and resolve the issue.
