Prerequisites
You can create a timings report by following our guide. Once you’ve generated the report, follow the steps below to analyze it.
How to Read a Timings Report
Once the report has been generated, you can open it. When you do, you’ll see one of two possible layouts.
Please note that this guide explains how to analyze a Timings v2 report, which is generated by PaperMC-based servers. If your report looks different from the examples below, it’s likely a Timings v1 report created by Spigot. In that case, you’ll need to follow the Spigot Timings Analysis Guide instead.
1) Check the Server TPS (Ticks Per Second)
Go to the “Avg” tab under the results bar and select it.
Look for the value labeled “Minecraft::Full Server Tick.”If it’s above 18 TPS (check the number shown inside the parentheses), your server isn’t suffering from consistent tick-related lag.The lag might instead be due to latency issues. To fix latency lag, consider changing your server’s location to one closer to your player base.
2) Check the Entity Count
Too many entities can consume a significant amount of your server’s processing power. To check this, go to “Regions” → “Count” and expand your world. There, you’ll see the total number of entities per region.
If your server has more than 2,000 entities at once, performance will likely suffer. In that case, we recommend reading our guide on how to reduce lag caused by entities on your server.
3) Check the Average Player Count
Players are also entities and consume valuable resources as the server processes their actions.Having too many players online at once can negatively affect server performance — especially if your server lacks enough RAM. As a general rule, if you have more than 20 players per 1 GB of RAM, consider upgrading your plan to reduce player-related lag (this ratio may vary depending on the server type).
To check the number of players in a region, go to “Regions” → “Count” and look for the “Player” value.
4) Resolve Alerts
PaperMC Timings reports often include alerts when certain configurations are not optimized or are set outside recommended ranges. For example, the report might warn that your server isn’t using Aikar’s Flags and provide a solution.
Alerts may vary, but each one will always include a cause and a suggested fix to help you address the issue.
Conclusion
In rare cases, you might not find clear evidence in your timings report of what’s causing your server lag.
If that happens, here are a few other ways to address performance issues that don’t appear in the report:
