How to Allocate More RAM to the Minecraft Launcher

Minecraft is a highly flexible game that allows users to customize almost every aspect of it. This is typically done with mods, which require a launcher to run. These mods depend on Forge or Fabric versions of Minecraft to function properly, but they may also need more memory. Many players try to load large collections of mods—known as modpacks—into the game, which can cause lag or other performance issues. This is mainly due to an insufficient amount of RAM allocated to the Minecraft launcher. Whether you’re using the default client or a modified one like CurseForge, allowing more memory is a universal feature that helps resolve these problems.

The Importance of RAM

Out of Memory in Minecraft

As briefly mentioned earlier, having too little memory allocated to your launcher can lead to several performance issues. These can range from lower FPS to the game client crashing completely in the middle of gameplay. Avoiding problems like these is an important part of the gaming experience—especially when you’re adding lots of mods to Minecraft. For example, running a large modpack with limited RAM will result in terrible frame rates and will likely make the game unplayable. Occasionally, a crash may occur if nothing is done to fix it.

Adding More RAM to Minecraft

Fortunately, allocating more memory to your launcher is quite simple. However, because there are several different platforms available, the process can vary slightly between them. Regardless of whether you’re using the default launcher or a custom one, assigning additional RAM is easy. Choose your client from one of the sections below to start adding more memory.

Default Launcher

Start your Minecraft launcher, then go to the Installations section.

ree

Find your desired profile and click on the three dots to the right.

ree

On the next screen, click More Options under Resolution.

ree

Scroll down to the JVM Arguments, then locate the -Xmx2G parameter.

ree

Proceed to change 2G to 4G or another reasonably high value.

Note: This represents the amount of memory to allocate, which is 2 GB by default.

Then, click Save in the bottom right corner to apply the changes.

CurseForge Application

Open the CurseForge app, then click the Settings button in the bottom left corner.

ree

On the next screen, select Minecraft under the Game Specific section.

ree

Next, scroll down until you see the Java Settings category.

Once there, adjust the Allocated Memory slider to increase the RAM.

When you’re done, click the X button in the top right corner to save the changes.

ree

Voidswrath

Open VoidLauncher and click Options in the top right corner.

ree

On the next page, select your desired memory size under Minecraft Options.

ree

After selecting one, go back to your modpack to start playing with the increased memory.

ATLauncher

Open ATLauncher and wait for it to fully load, then click Settings in the bottom right corner.

ree

Next, go to the Java/Minecraft tab at the top.

ree

Once there, locate Maximum Memory/RAM and change it to your desired value.

ree

When you’re done, click Save at the bottom to apply the changes.

Technic Launcher

Open Technic, then click Launcher Options in the top right corner.

ree

In the new window, select the Java Settings category.

ree

From here, choose your desired value in the Memory dropdown menu.

ree

When you’re done, simply close the dialog box and start playing.

FTB Application

Open the FTB app and click Library in the top left corner.

ree

Find the instance of your desired modpack, then select it from the list.

Next, click Settings near the right side of the screen.

ree

From here, adjust the slider in the Instance Memory section to allocate RAM.

ree

When you’re done, go back to your modpack instance to start playing.

Common Issues

Unable to Allocate More Than 2 GBSometimes, players may have an incorrect version of Java installed on their computer. This can cause memory allocation problems, such as being unable to go beyond 2 GB. If this happens to you, download an updated version of Java and try again. Make sure to close and reopen the launcher to see if it works, though sometimes issues may still persist. If nothing seems to work, try reinstalling the client and/or the profile instance. Otherwise, there could be an underlying issue with your machine.

Minecraft Crashing / Lagging

If your game crashes or experiences lag, the cause is likely still insufficient RAM. Try increasing it through your launcher’s options and see if that resolves the issue. However, it’s strongly recommended not to set your RAM value to the maximum. Doing so could create unwanted problems that won’t help your situation. In other words, keep your memory allocation within reasonable limits.
